Layers of paint in a picturesque patina conjure a feeling of history and travel.
In association with Resene.
Creating a space from scratch that feels gently time-worn (in the most charming way) can be a challenge. By using Resene FX Paint Effects, we set out to capture that lived-in character with a mural that channels the feeling of a European escape. The result? A space imbued with warmth, texture and a sense of story. Here’s how we did it:
1. Paint your walls with two coats of the main base colour that will form the largest area of your mural — we used Resene Morning Haze. Allow to dry.
2. Combine Resene FX Paint Effects with a testpot colour at a ratio of 95% Resene FX Paint Effects and 5% Resene testpot in a darker but similar shade to the base.
3. To achieve the textural effect, use a wide brush to paint large X-shaped brushstrokes of your new colour over the base shade, before rubbing it to blend with a clean cloth. Allow to dry.
4. Use a pencil to freehand draw the organic shapes you’ll paint over the top. Paint the first shape with a solid colour and leave to dry, then do the same for the others.
5. Working one shape at a time, repeat steps two and three until you’re done. See below for the colours we used with Resene FX Paint Effects.

Stylist’s tip
Want that beautifully soft layered look? Choose a paint colour a few shades deeper than your base, then mix it in a ratio of 95% Resene Paint FX with 5% colour. Blend it well using a clean rag.
