At the Newmarket retail outlet of Untouched World, a lone cabbage tree, once sacred to Māori and which served as an ancient landmark for travellers through the area, was part of the inspiration behind the fit-out. Designed by Gezellig Interiors, the palette
in the new store features timber, woven cloth, honeycomb, metal and bluestone dug from a local quarry. A woven leaf basket by master weaver Paula Rigby and Māori kites which fly above the store floor are two eye-catchers. “The kites link the Earth to the sky and symbolise a soaring freedom of the spirit and an ideal relationship between people and nature,” says Annique Heesen, studio principal at Gezellig Interiors. In keeping with the sustainability ethos of Untouched World, natural elements intersect with the clothing displays. There’s macrocarpa art, a vase made using sand from local beaches and display tables crafted from tōtara felled in a storm.
