The stream-of-consciousness thoughts and sketches that form the basis of the Ritual Chair provide an insight into its conceptual naissance. Designer Michael Gilling was on a silent retreat in 2018 when he first envisaged a simplistic yet balanced chair, where feminine qualities took precedence and which answered the question, ‘In nature, what invites you to sit?’ Ritual Chair, available in walnut, oak or custom timber, has just been released by Xylo Woodcraft, a studio based in Ōtautahi/Christchurch. Its pure craftsmanship and modern lines align with the company’s focus on functional, intentional pieces that move beyond the obvious. Finished with an upholstered soft seat in a Wilson & Dorset woollen fabric, or Lotura by Design Of The Times, its structure is solid, but its soul celebrates the art of comfort.
