We asked Sophia Leopardi, director of South Australian architecture firm Williams Burton Leopardi, to share her definitive design picks for 2025, spanning furniture, lighting, materials, and kitchen appliances.

Our ‘Definitive Design Products’ series was first featured inside est magazine issue 56: ‘Living Connection’.

01. Maxalto Kalos Armchair

“A constant favourite,” Leopardi says of the Maxalto Kalos armchair by Italian architect and designer Antonio Citterio. Complete with an adjustable slipcover and footrest, “there’s a nostalgic familiarity in its classic form—a gentle elegance that softens any space.”

02. Edra Standard Sofa

On the Edra Standard sofa by Italian designer Francesco Binfaré, Leopardi says, “It’s a design that bridges eras and its beauty is not at the expense of comfort.” With adjustable back and armrests, she adds, “its versatility speaks to how our spaces respond to the movement of daily life.”

03. Miyazaki Kai #42 Chair

Based on sketches from designer Kai Kristiansen’s family home in Denmark, the Miyazaki Kai #42 chair is a one-of-a-kind dining piece. “It’s the nuance of this piece that sets it apart—the arms are just the right length to rest your elbows on, and the backrest has a tilt adjustment to respond to your posture,” Leopardi says.

04. CDK Stone Roman Silver Travertine

For Leopardi, Australian stone supplier CDK’s Roman Silver travertine is her “final meal request of stone.” Inspired by the Italian capital, with its beige background and silver horizontal veins, “this material folds together so many elements to create a perfectly imperfect palette of nature.”

05. Poltrona Frau Kyoto Coffee Table

When Leopardi first saw Italian architect and designer Gianfranco Frattini’s Poltrona Frau Kyoto coffee table, she “drew breath for the first time.” “This piece embodies a clash of cultures, brought to life through exquisite detailing and a lightness of form and materiality,” she says.

06. Viabizzuno Roy Lettura Floor Lamp

The Roy Lettura floor lamp, designed by Italian brand Viabizzuno’s creative director Mario Nanni, features a single rod supporting its flat light head and a second stem for its dial dimmer. “It’s the perfect floor lamp to place beside your favourite reading spot or to gently illuminate a space,” Leopardi says.

07. Astra Walker Tapware Range

When it comes to tapware, Leopardi turns to Australian-made Astra Walker for everything from kitchens to bathrooms and laundries. “They deliver on design and quality, with a timeless aesthetic that elevates the daily rituals within our spaces,” she says.

08. Tumbled Marchet Limestone

Crafted from premium limestone in a palette of greys and taupes, Marchet limestone from Adelaide-based Tumbled features in Leopardi’s own home. “This material brings an immediate sense of permanency and a lived-in quality to new spaces, softened by its tumbled edges and surface,” she says.

09. Armadillo Agra Rugs

Described by Leopardi as “the workhorse in so many of our projects,” Armadillo rugs—Australian-owned and handcrafted in India—are a go-to for more than just their aesthetic. “Armadillo has many aligned values that elevate our projects in a consistent and understated manner,” she says.

10. La Marzocco Linea Mini

“It’s the Ferrari of coffee machines,” Leopardi says of the Italian-made La Marzocco Linea Mini. With its new pre-infusion system and adjustable pump pressure, “it can be temperamental and a little tricky to master, but I love it in all its robust dominance of my kitchen bench!”

11. Gaggenau Kitchen Oven 200 Series

Originating from Germany’s Black Forest, Gaggenau’s 200 oven series stands out to Leopardi for its “beautiful integration, handcrafted quality, and superior performance.” Featuring flush installation, pyrolytic cleaning, and 13 heating methods, it’s “one for the personal ‘one day’ wish list,” she says.

12. Fisher & Paykel Series 11 Integrated Refrigerator Freezer

New Zealand-founded Fisher & Paykel’s Series 11 Integrated refrigerator range has been a staple in Williams Burton Leopardi’s interiors for years. “They continue to evolve in both design and performance, remaining our brand of choice for refrigeration,” Leopardi says.
