Dedicated to the design of products that foster a simpler way of living, Plyroom is a Melbourne-based company specialising in furniture and accessories that are beautifully crafted, sustainable and versatile. Today they have launched an exciting new range of shelving, the Shibui Collection. Named after the Japanese term Shibui which refers to an aesthetic of simple, subtle and unobtrusive beauty, the collection showcases these qualities in an all-new modular furniture range, conceived and produced by Plyroom in collaboration with Melbourne-based designer Joel Wells.

The collection consists of six distinctive storage pieces that arise from a simple yet complex modular shelving system. Together these pieces offer a vast variety of uses for all manner of living spaces as well as flexibility to suit changing needs and lifestyles.

“The design of this collection has been an exercise in simplicity, paring forms back to the basic essentials. The resulting modular shelving system, which takes inspiration from Shibui objects, is characterised by its clean lines, sustainable materials and thoughtful details,” says Plyroom founder, Elise Heslop. “Shibui objects appear to be simple overall but include subtle details that balance simplicity with complexity, so that you are constantly finding new meanings and enriched beauty within that object, causing its aesthetic value to grow over time”.

Despite having an incredibly sturdy timber construction with pieces available in FSC certified Birch and Tasmanian Oak, the collection is visibly light. Thoughtful detailing including beautiful curved edging and brushed brass details that appear like pearls or punctuation marks add depth to the pieces as well as a unique touch.

Timeless rather than trend based, the Shibui Collection encompasses a side table, open sideboard, room divider and other formations. Providing a beautiful shelving and storage solution for any room of the home, the versatility of the pieces also make them ideal for small living spaces.
