I’m thinking a lot about rugs at the moment because I’d normally be at Domotex now seeing carpets on display from all over the world – thousands of them! With the fair canceled, like most design fairs here in Germany, I still wanted to jump on my blog today and share something special and when it comes to rugs, the brand SERA HELSINKI from Finland came immediately to mind.

LAINE Rug – Woven

I first discovered SERA HELSINKI while visiting Helsinki several years ago, and as a proud owner of their woven LAINE rug in creamy white (200×300), I can stand behind this brand 100% – which is extremely important to me. There’s nothing less convincing than to read a review about products from a writer who has never experienced them firsthand. I’ve lived with a LAINE rug in my home for a year now and it’s one of my most cherish possessions.

At SERA HELSINKI, every knotted and woven rug is unique because, “All sheep are different in color and every weaver works in a different way so there are no two identical rugs,” even the thread is handmade by their weavers in Africa following hundreds of years of Ethiopian traditions. “The aim of SERA HELSINKI is to empower the most vulnerable groups in Ethiopia – people with disabilities and single mothers,” and they are able to do this by providing them with good, stable employment and in return, exceptional rugs are produced.

(Note: You can learn more about their ethical work on their website.)

All of their carpets are made on demand, so when you order from their online shop, they will begin producing it in Ethiopia for you which takes about 2-3 months to complete. During the process, they’ll send photos and information so you can see the progress of your rug. I experienced this while they made my LAINE Rug and it was very helpful, I was able get the perfect tone of white for my space, for instance. They can also produce rugs that are a little larger or smaller from what is listed on their website, so if you need a very specific size, you can request it.

I hope you’ve enjoyed meeting SERA HELSINKI today, and I hope that you find a rug on their website to fall in love with as much as I did, and have! I’ll share photos of the rug in my own home in a separate post next week.

Love,

Holly
