Ceramics are almost as old as civilization itself. According to most archeological research, the art of fired clay dates back at least 25,000-29,000 years, marking one of the oldest and most widespread human inventions. Remarkably, it’s also a practice that is always continuing to evolve. In 2025, the simple, organic building blocks of clay remain at the cutting edge of design, opening up new technological and aesthetic frontiers in function, sustainability and creative expression. For designers, ceramic tiles are an evolving well of inspiration. On November 27, AZURE and Tile of Spain are exploring the future — and heritage — of ceramics with a free talk and exhibition.
Taking place at the University of Toronto’s Hart House, the event brings together a trio of acclaimed Canadian designers as well as a group of leading companies represented under the Tile of Spain umbrella. Hosted by AZURE Senior Editor Stefan Novakovic, a dynamic panel discussion with architects and interior designers Miren Etxezarreta-Aranburu, Ali McQuaid Mitchell and Anna Kao, will be followed by an exhibition by Tile of Spain companies, as well as a lunch of Spanish tapas.
Following up on last year’s talk with Odami’s Aránzazu González Bernardo and Office Ou’s Nicolas Koff, the discussion will explore the evolving possibilities of ceramics in Canadian design, highlighting diverse case studies and design strategies applied at projects of varying scales and typologies. The talk will also explore the convergence of Spanish and Canadian design cultures, with insights on use of Spanish ceramics in the North American context.
Miren Etxezarreta-Aranburu, Hariri Pontarini Architects
Educated at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de San Sebastián (ETSASS) and the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Spanish-born architect Miren joined leading Canadian practice Hariri Pontarini Architects (HPA) in 2013 as an Architectural Designer and Project Manager. Having worked in London, Barcelona and Toronto, she brings over 14 years of diverse international experience in all phases of a project from design through construction completion.
She is an integral member of HPA’s award-winning institutional studio and was involved in the successful delivery of major projects such as the award-winning Bahá’i Temple of South America, the Tom Patterson Theatre at the Stratford Festival, the BARLO MS Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital, and the Royal Ontario Museum Welcome Project. Miren also led the team for the new Goldfarb Gallery at York University, as well as the Pickering Heritage Community Centre, which aims to achieve CaGBC Zero Carbon Building Design Certification.
Ali McQuaid Mitchell, Futurestudio
Ali McQuaid Mitchell is the founder of Toronto design firm Futurestudio. She and her team provide a forward-thinking approach, deeply committed to designing spaces that anticipate and respond to changing lifestyles and environmental needs. Ali’s dedication to creating spaces that reflect her clients’ personalities and lifestyles has earned her a reputation as one of Toronto’s most sought-after designers. Anna Kao, Anna Kao Design
Anna Kao is an architect and strategic design leader based in Toronto and New York City, with over 30 years of experience delivering impactful design and cultural projects. She studied architecture at the University of Toronto and built her career in Hong Kong, San Francisco and New York City before returning to Canada.
As a former director at dkstudio architects, she gained expertise in luxury retail design, working with many of world’s most renowned fashion brands. Active in Toronto’s design community, Anna contributes to DesignTO as part of the core volunteer team and she serves on the Board of DIAC (Design Industry Advisory Committee). Anna maintains a dedicated involvement at both non-profit organizations focused on advancing the value and joy of design.
