director Dave Bickmore invites est inside his Adelaide abode, which he shares with his wife and 11-month-old daughter.
In inner south, architects Dave Bickmore () and Kate Russo () have reshaped an 1896 cottage for their expanding family. The playful, light-filled home is an endearing reflection of the couple’s shared passion for design, art and travel. “While we work at different practices, across different typologies, we were able to create something really beautiful together,” Dave says.
The kitchen’s material palette consists of , Calacatta Bianca marble bench tops and clean white walls. Custom upholstered in rest underneath the central island, and a Longton pendant in gunmetal rests on the wall.
The design is imagined as two halves, with the front half celebrating the original cottage and a forming the back half. “We wanted to create a design aesthetic that balanced contemporary elements with classic, heritage elements,” Dave explains.
The kitchen is a passage between the old and the new, opening onto a central courtyard. Before Dave and Kate purchased the home, it was owned by a local terrazzo manufacturer; a piece of its past that the couple thought to honour in the form of a terrazzo-tiled floor. Kate says that the kitchen is where they spend most of their time; “We love to cook, not to mention the central island is great for gathering around to eat, drink or just chat.”
Graphic artwork – CJ Hendry and James Brown – and lighting – the Akari UF3-Q floor lamp – are contrasted with French oak floors and a corresponding dining set – a custom-made Remington Matters table and .
Dave and Kate introduced pops of colour in their dining space through graphic artwork and lighting. “One of our favourite pieces in the home is the artwork that sits above the dining table by our good friend James Brown,” Dave says. “The art and objects in our home say a lot about the places we have visited and the friends we’ve made in the creative space,” he adds.
In the connecting living space, Dave and Kate’s penchant for colour, texture and pattern comes to light, materialising in the form of a central rug, a navy-blue boucle sofa, a plaid accent lounge chair, and various vases and objects. These pieces are further highlighted through a canvas of white walls, French oak floors and grey terrazzo – as seen in the kitchen.
The rest of the spaces have been approached similarly, with playful elements and more sober pieces to reinforce the dialogue between old and new.
The living space features a , , , Floyd coffee table and a multi-coloured central rug. The also features with a collection of vases and objects.
