Black kitchen cabinets are a great choice if you want a contrasting look in your kitchen and just like white, beige, or grey, black cabinets are neutral and timeless so they are easy to combine with a variety of different materials on your walls, floors, or countertops.

Below you can find my top selection of kitchen ideas with black cabinets and while they all have the kitchen cabinets color in common, they all have their distinct layout plan and color palette to go with it. You can combine black kitchen cabinets with stainless steel for a more industrial look, go for shaker cabinets for a contrasting yet classic design or use elements like limestone, marble, or gold details to make your black kitchen more elegant and sophisticated.

A white and black cabinets kitchen with a beige limestone countertop

The off-white painted walls, white-soaped hardwood floors, and white ceilings in the apartment form the perfect backdrop for the contrasting black kitchen cabinets with chrome hardware in a subtle shaker style.

The limestone countertops add a lot of warmth to the look and the single row of black cabinets has been completed with white cabinets on the walls for a lighter and more balanced look. The open shelving and small black pendant lights finish off this elegant look perfectly.

Black cabinets on top and bottom

The black cabinetry in this kitchen has been planned out on the top and the bottom for a look that’s a bit more on the dark side, yet because of the contrast with the white walls and the white marble countertops the result is contrasting yet elegant.

The black cabinets show a bit of wood grain and are paired up with black hardware for a tone-on-tone look. The distressed dining table combined with the metal dining chairs adds a bit of a rustic industrial touch to the space, which contrasts nicely with the sleek modern look of the tick marble on the counters.

Black cabinets with an original backsplash and an exposed brick wall

The L-shape of the kitchen in this room combined with higher storage cupboards on the wall opposite the window really enhances the layout and the interior design of this space.

The matt black cabinets pair up nicely with the subtle off-white walls and the exposed brick wall adds a lot of character. Rather than going for a backsplash that is spread over the entire length of the kitchen, pentagon tiles are placed behind the cooking space and the sink area to protect the wall.

Black kitchen cabinets with gold hardware and white marble countertops

This large yet narrow kitchen layout with black cabinets works really well in this space with a full row of windows on the side. When planning the kitchen remodel, the lower cupboards were placed on either side of the layout, with upper cabinets and full-height cupboards completing the design.

The gold hardware and the white marble on the countertop and backsplash finish off the look of this black cabinets kitchen really nicely and add a classy touch to the design. Note that the upper cabinets have glass fronts, which makes the kitchen design lighter in appearance.

Black cabinetry combined with black appliances for a dramatic effect

The combination of the black shaker cabinets with the black hood against the white wall and white flooring in this apartment has so much contrast and frankly has a bit of a dramatic touch.

The upper cabinets are placed slightly below the ceiling, drawing attention to the crown molding. The gold hardware and faucet work nicely against the black cabinets and the little white marble bistro table finishes this kitchen look off perfectly.

A black kitchen with stainless steel appliances for an industrial kitchen look

The concrete beams and pillars give this space an industrial appearance already, which is enhanced even more by the use of stainless steel in the kitchen design. The combination of the lower cabinets and the kitchen island works well in this niche corner and upper cabinets are used solely in the darkest area of the space, where natural light is scarcest.

The white floating shelving next to the stainless steel hood adds an elegant touch to the subway tile backsplash that goes all the way up to the ceiling and the metal bar stools strengthen the industrial look even more.

Matt black cabinets combined with a white shiplap backsplash

The sleek modern look of the matt black cabinets in this small and narrow kitchen combined with the white marble on the counter, the white backsplash made of shiplap, and the beige limestone treatment on the wall and sloped ceiling make for an elegant and interesting look.

The black cabinets are combined with black hardware and black wall lamps for a tone-on-tone look and narrow white cabinets are used in the more narrow section of the kitchen providing extra kitchen storage in a compact space without overcrowding the layout.

Black shaker cabinets with stainless steel appliances and open shelving

This black kitchen has such impressive design details combined. The shaker-style black cabinets combined with the exposed brick wall, stainless steel appliances, gold hardware, and wall-to-wall open shelving have such an impressive effect on the space.

The natural light coming in through the windows creates a soft reflection on the semi-matt black cabinets and the white shiplap backsplash adds a bit of a farmhouse touch to the interior design of the space.

A minimal black kitchen with white countertops

This kitchen belongs to interior designer Elisabeth Heier and is the perfect example of how black cabinets can work in a minimalist kitchen design. The matt black kitchen cabinets have an integrated handle in the front and the exhaust is built into a white casing to match the color of the walls.

The black cabinets stand out so nicely against the soft oak hardwood flooring and the white backsplash wall and the black comes back in the faucet and the dining chairs as well for an integrated look.

A penthouse kitchen with black cabinets

A penthouse is an ideal spot for a black kitchen, as they usually tend to get an abundance of daylight. The layout of this beautiful kitchen has been meticulously planned around the sloped ceilings and the black cabinets are paired up with a beautiful marble stone on the counters and on the kitchen island.

The cooking space has been integrated into the marble kitchen island and the sink has been placed in an area with a lot of ceiling height. Both places allow you to stand comfortably, while storage functionalities (like the wine cooler) and other appliances are located underneath the area with a lower ceiling.

Black kitchen with leather pulls and a black wooden countertop

This kitchen has a lot of character and personality because of the leather pulls and the vintage dining table, however, the kitchen module itself has a very minimal look. The wood of the black cabinets comes back in the same wooden countertop for an integrated effect.

The kitchen layout has been planned in an L-shape by the wall to allow additional functionality in the rest of the room of this small apartment. Note that the upper cabinets are white, for a lighter appearance.

Black cabinets with a visible wood grain and a subway backsplash

The layout of this black and white kitchen has been planned in such an elegant way. The kitchen cabinets are also used as window seat which is filled with a variety of throw pillows. Almost the entire wall has been filled with low cabinet modules, with the exception of the hood which is cased in white fronts.

On the side of the room opposite the window, all the full-height cupboards are located for extra storage, and rather than having all-black cabinetry, a lighter look has been achieved with white kitchen cabinets on the other wall.

Black cabinets with stainless steel hardware against a light grey wall

The matt black cabinets of this kitchen are combined with a black faucet, marble on the counters, and stainless steel hardware for an elegant look in this turn-of-the-century apartment.

The impressive Vertigo pendant above the island is a real focal point in this kitchen and adds a sophisticated look to the space. Almost the entire kitchen consists out of black cabinets, however, the upper cabinets holding the hood have been picked out in a light grey color that matches the color scheme of the walls.

A loft-style kitchen with dark cabinets

Though at first glance these kitchen cabinets seem to be black when you take a closer look at the pictures you’ll notice they are a very dark grey. The impressive height of the kitchen highlights the ceiling height of this beautiful loft and you can see there is a ladder rail installed to reach the top kitchen cabinets.

The warm stone counters and backsplash combined with the gold hardware and the oak wood dining table and chairs add a lot of warmth to the color scheme of this beautiful loft.

Black cabinets with a visible wood grain in a living kitchen

The visible wood grain in this kitchen with black cabinets gives an elegant texture to the kitchen, which consists of lower cupboards exclusively for a lighter look spread out over two main modules: one with the sink and one with the cooking space.

The black cupboards that form the kitchen island are open on the back, turning the kitchen into an open bookshelf on the side of the living room, which is a great solution for a living kitchen.

The light beige walls are enhanced by the beige limestone countertops and the stainless steel hardware with the cognac leather detail finishes off this look perfectly.

Matt black cabinets without hardware and black marble countertops

The black kitchen cabinets in this spacious kitchen don’t have any hardware, which gives them a very clean and minimal look. The black marble countertop and backsplash accentuate the dramatic effect the black cabinets have on the space even further and the contrast with the white paint on the wall is impressive.

The large black cabinets on the wall flow over into low cabinets that are made into a beautiful seating bench by the dining table and the island module in the middle completes the look perfectly.

Black kitchen cabinets combined with beige walls and brass hardware for a warm look

The combination of the black kitchen cabinets with the visible wood grain, the beige walls, and the fresh white marble on the countertops work so well in this beautiful kitchen. The kitchen cabinets on the top and bottom are completed with a tall cupboard on the opposite wall for ample storage space.

The black kitchen cabinets are combined with brass hardware and a brass faucet from Tapwell is the cherry on top of this beautiful space.

Black kitchen cabinets wrapped around a corner for an interesting and contrasting design

The layout of this black kitchen is uncommon, yet by continuing the kitchen layout and wrapping it around the wall corner, an extra worktop is created and the kitchen visually appears bigger.

The black kitchen cabinets are combined with chrome hardware with leather details and a beige limestone countertop adds a warm touch to the black and grey palette of the cabinets and the wall color. The small black pendant lights finish the look of nicely and I love the floating shelves on the side of the high cupboards for the little clipboards as decor.
