The subtle contrast of heritage and modernity is one that’s explored often, but this 19th Century home, located in inner-city Melbourne, reveals that it’s the similarities between the two that can be most compelling. Comparable to Georgina Jeffries Lorne Beach House, In transforming this home, Jeffries sought to recondition the old while introducing contemporary flourishes. In keeping elements of the Victorian layout intact, Jeffries has found ways to play with light, proportion and mood. 

Upon entering a neutral, airy hallway, the eye is immediately led into a jewel-box toned enclave: a family room rendered in deep-sea green. Navy cabinetry, a gilded mirror and velvet Poliform sofa are complemented by a soft-pink Murano chandelier. A cluster of chunky, tall candles at the room’s hearth is equally aesthetically current and evocative. 

Moving into the body of the home, muted white walls and pale grey cabinetry offer streamlined contrasts to dark timber chevron flooring, which runs throughout the ground floor. In the home’s dining room, a black dining table and fireplace are moody contrasts to Gubi Beetle dining chairs and a cloud-like chandelier comprised of a cluster of gently-lit, glass spheres. A powder-room is fitted with quirky wallpaper and grown-up brass fittings, while the bathroom is a cleaner, more geometric space dominated by a pink marble shower encased in tall, black-framed glass.
