Check out how easy it is to make diy clothing labels with twill tape and fabric ink! Super cheap and they hold up great, this is perfect for handmade gifts and clothes. #diylabels #clothinglabels #twilltape

I have experimented with lots of different tag options (I shared a bunch of them in a wash test, here) but I think my favorite so far are twill tape & fabric ink stamped DIY labels! I chime in often on Facebook groups about sewing and always get follow up questions on what stamp pad I use, so I thought I’d put in one spot for reference. This is a dirt cheap way to label your handmade clothes, and the stamped designs have held up well over the years with lots of washing.

Lauren at Baste + Gather has a tutorial for actually sewing the twill tape on if you’re covering the seam, you can see sometimes I just tuck a bit underneath, too.  The supplies I have always used are this twill tape*, fabric ink*, and an assortment of tiny stamps* that I’ve collected. I also use a pressing cloth (plain piece of thin cotton) and iron to ‘heat set’ the ink after I’ve stamped, holding it down for 30 seconds. Someone else (I can’t remember who, please let me know if it was you!) told me they use stamps and fabric markers instead, which seems like it would work well too (like this Sharpie fabric pen*).

Labels are great for helping kids put clothes on the right way and also for handmedowns! Raise your hand if you’ve stored a handmade clothing item for baby siblings, pulled it out and wondered what size it would fit? This fixes that!

Here I used it as a simple size tag on a few embellished raglans for boys.

I added some silly cats and covered the back seam for a gifted merino hoodie.

This was placed too high up, instead of over the seam, but I still like the look on a Kymy’s Dolman.

Another quick and easy size tag for some baby harem pants.

Have you tried this diy label method? What is your favorite?
