Something interesting is happening in interiors right now.
At exactly the moment when we have more inspiration than ever — endless saved rooms, perfectly styled homes, AI-generated spaces, shopping links for almost everything we see — the rooms that feel most exciting are becoming harder to copy.
They aren’t perfect.
The wood is darker. The marble might stain. There are old things beside new things, furniture that doesn’t quite match, art collected over years rather than ordered all at once. You can see the hand of the person who made something.
This isn’t really another trend. It feels more like a reaction to what our homes have become.
The Perfect Home Is Losing Its Appeal

For years, there was a reliable formula for a desirable interior: pale oak, neutral walls, a cream sofa, brass hardware, sculptural furniture and perhaps an olive tree in the corner.
None of these things are bad. The problem was that we all saw the same rooms so many times that beautiful interiors started becoming strangely anonymous.
Now designers are moving in the opposite direction.
One of the more interesting ideas to emerge this year is the “anti-flip house” — a move away from homes designed around universal resale appeal and towards interiors with architectural quirks, darker materials, patina and very personal decisions.
The house is allowed to age again.
Craft Is Becoming the New Luxury

Look at what is happening at this month’s London Design Festival and you’ll see craft everywhere: weaving, ceramics, experimental materials, traditional techniques and objects where the hand of the maker is deliberately visible.
For years, “modern” often meant perfect surfaces and invisible construction.
Now those tiny irregularities are becoming the desirable part.
A hand-thrown bowl isn’t beautiful despite the fact that the next one will be slightly different.
That’s why it’s beautiful.
And in a world where almost anything can be reproduced, something that cannot be perfectly duplicated suddenly feels very luxurious.
The Best Rooms Don’t Match

Another change is that everything no longer needs to agree.
Chrome beside old pine. Walnut with stainless steel. Rough plaster against glossy lacquer. A faded rug under a contemporary sofa.
Real homes rarely develop according to a mood board.
You inherit something. You find something while travelling. You buy a chair because you love it even though you’re not sure where it belongs.
Twenty years later, somehow, it all works.
That’s the difference between a room that was assembled and one that was collected.
AI Might Be Making Imperfection More Valuable

And then there is AI.
We can now generate a flawless Parisian apartment or perfect English kitchen in seconds. The proportions are right. The lighting is beautiful. Nothing is out of place.
Perhaps that’s exactly why things that are slightly out of place are starting to matter more.
AI can generate the image of an antique table.
It can’t give you your antique table.
The one with the mark on top. The one you found on holiday. The one that belonged to someone before you.
As our visual world becomes easier to generate, copy and perfect, the things that are genuinely singular begin to feel more precious.
What This Means for Your Home

Thankfully, it doesn’t mean you need to redecorate. That would rather defeat the point.
Keep the scratched table.
Mix the inherited chair with the contemporary sofa.
Buy something vintage instead of automatically buying new.
Choose materials you love even if they won’t remain pristine forever.
Hang the slightly strange painting.
And when you’re considering buying something new, ask yourself:
Would I still want this if I’d never seen it on Instagram?
Because the most interesting interiors of 2026 aren’t rejecting beauty.
They’re rejecting sameness.
After years of perfectly coordinated rooms, perhaps we’re finally remembering that a home should contain different years, different people and different versions of you.
A little wear. A little contradiction. A little evidence of life.
Maybe the next big interior trend isn’t a look at all.
Maybe it’s having a home that couldn’t possibly belong to anyone else.
