Another exemplary project to join the AIDA residential design shortlist for 2019; The Clubhouse by Wolveridge Architects gives a renewed reason to return to a childhood holiday spot after years of travel.

The Clubhouse takes up a pristine position in the dunes of the Mornington Peninsula, overlooking the fairways and surrounds of Sorrento Golf Club. One of the clients grew up in an old Merchant home on the property, where they holidayed throughout their childhood. So it was a beautiful full circle when the clients decided that after many years overseas, they would return to create their forever beach abode here, at the respected hands of Wolveridge Architects.

From concept to completion Wolveridge Architects kept climate front of mind, working towards sustainable and low maintenance solutions wherever possible. Situated in the dunes among the tea tree scrub, the timber clad Clubhouse is constructed deep into the undulating land, leaving it elevated for exceptional views of the golf course and beyond. As the studio points out, “at a very basic level – this is a beach house, that incorporates cross ventilation pathways through it at both levels, with framed garden outlooks and a significant focus on the experience of natural light”.

Also paramount to the project was creating a luxury upper-level suite that included a landscaped outdoor area and cantilevered pool. Here protected outdoor spaces have been incorporated, to fully appreciate the landscape design that features coastal dune flora native to the area.

Everyday comforts and quality design choices make this home appear more like a stylish permanent residence than a holiday home. Just take the Apparatus Pendant that sits above the sculpted kitchen island bench and its carved out sink; the ideal entertainers setting. The highly sculptural features of the kitchen are present throughout the brutalist interior, in the steel and concrete stairs and bathroom with its concrete sinks and stone bath on a timber platform. That’s without mentioning the extent of joinery throughout offering plenty of cleverly placed storage options. Design highlights also include the Lampadiare Droit Lamp by Serge Mouille and the Jacqueline Bed available at Poliform.

Optimising the location at every opportunity, Wolveridge Architects have designed an opulent beach house steeped in nostalgia – the perfect backdrop for years of travel collectables.
