When the pandemic first began, I discovered the work of Icelandic artist . She created that, while not protective, would certainly encourage social distancing by being (delightfully) bizarre. This was an extension of her sweaters and other work, which is what I’d like to focus on today.
The viscera of the human body—particularly the mouth with emphasis on the tongue—is ever-present in Ýrúrarí’s designs. Mouths with their tongues sticking out and teeth with braces decorate the bodies and arms of her sweaters and also form the basis of her balaclavas. Unexpected and playful, they add some welcome color to cold-weather gear, which can be very dark and drab. Ýrúrarí’s work encourages us to cooler temps with the same sort of fun we might pair a festive vacation shirt in the summer.
