Eminent Australian design retailer Spence & Lyda stage a “multi-faceted sustainability narrative for our time”, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of acclaimed local and international designers as part of MDW.

Spence & Lyda’s ‘Futures Collective’ for MDW brings together local designers Jon Goulder, Broached Commissions, Fiona Lynch Office, Authentic Design Alliance and Otomys Gallery, as well as international designers Álvaro Catalán de Ocón and Lucy Kurrein in a three-part event focusing on the “preciousness of time, talent and planet”.

The first of the three events will take place on March 24 at the NGV Members Lounge, where Spanish designer Álvaro Catalán de Ocón will present his collection of sustainably-made rugs entitled ‘Plastic Rivers’, produced in collaboration with GAN Rugs. Woven in yarn made from salvaged PET bottles, the rugs mark the sequel to Álvaro’s award-winning collection of PET Lamps, launched almost ten years ago. Each rug depicts a detailed rendering of an aerial image of the planet’s most polluted rivers, containing a critical message about plastic contamination and waste distribution in our water systems.

Taking place around ‘Plastic Rivers’ will be two exclusive events held at the Villa Alba Museum in Kew. The first of the two, ‘Meet the Designers’, will take place on March 19 and March 26 and will offer a unique opportunity to connect with the stories and mission behind each piece in Futures Collective. The second, ‘After Hours’, will take place on March 22 and will headline with a talk from Álvaro on the story behind ‘Plastic Rivers’, which he initially delivered to an audience at Super Salone Milan in 2021.

Futures Collective is located at Villa Alba Museum, 44 Walmer Street Kew, and can be accessed from March 17 – March 26 2022, during opening hours. Tickets to Futures Collective are free; no bookings required.
