Nestled within a leafy site opposite the sailing club in Sorrento, Victoria, this two-storey Merchant Builder-style beach house was typical of this era. Unsympathetic renovations, uninspiring cabinetry and partitioned spaces rendered it in need of a complete overhaul.
Stripping the home back to its bare bones,
Deliberate tension between angular structural elements and tactile furnishings throughout both levels of the home pay tribute to the rigour of the original cabin.
A custom wicker screen by third-generation Melbourne weavers Camberwell Cane frames the staircase and extends from the hallway downstairs to the dining space upstairs. While the home steers clear of obvious seaside references, the wicker and sisal have subtle coastal connotations.
Downstairs, curved walls alleviate the linear nature of the home. The rounded entrance wall, clad in sage plaster, faintly recreates the colour of where the sea meets the sky. This colour reappears throughout the primary ensuite; in the silver Travertine floor tiles, Domenico Mori handmade porcelain baked clay wall tiles and the bathroom cabinetry.
The Sorrento House is a subtle reminder of place. Fiona Lynch Office have created an all-embracing sense of seclusion and privacy in a beachfront home through a deeply considered design resolution.
