The AZ Awards issue packs much more than our winners and finalists — though they certainly take pride of place. (And you can read all about them on our dedicated AZ Awards site.) This edition also features our takeaways from Milan Design Week: From the novelties that captured our imagination to the city’s best brand displays, it’s a feast for the eyes.
Colour was king: Citrus- and grape-flavoured sports drinks came to mind as we toured the stands of Salone del Mobile and the venues of Fuorisalone. From Kartell to Cassina and Moroso, saturated palettes held sway. And these are but a few of the Italian brands that stood out: B&B Italia, Living Divani, Minotti, Poliform and more displayed strong collections that held our attention during a frenzied, no-time-to-linger week. There were also new takes on wicker — who knew the woven aesthetic more synonymous with grandma’s garden furniture could become the next big thing, for indoors and out? And the most conceptual installations — from Gucci to Bocci, from Fisher & Paykel’s EuroCucina stand to Grohe Spa’s wellness sanctuary in the city — took elemental ideas to a monumental place.
This issue also features OMA’s expansion of the New Museum in New York. Tim McKeough describes the much-discussed project as “an equal partner that makes the beloved original even better.” OMA’s intervention, he explains, solves the issues of the SANAA design, with its cramped circulation routes, “while exhibiting surprising deference [to it].”
Meanwhile, our Spotlight on Building Envelopes looks at other buildings around the world that explore new approaches to thermally insulated systems, from a Porto home that uses rice husks in its exterior panels to The Hive in Vancouver, where Dialog designed a timber exoskeleton structurally sound enough to eschew the need for concrete cores. Rounding out our product features are Spec Sheets sections on the latest bathroom furniture, fixtures and fittings and the most visually and aurally compelling acoustics collections.
