In this Nine to Know, we uncover how sublime design sets the scene for repose.
Cultivating a sanctuary-like bedroom space is no one-step feat. In est magazine’s 46th issue, we unpacked the various steps in our Detail pages – the most important of which will come as no surprise: the bed. The theme of this Nine to Know is respect for rest, a sentiment shared by some of the world’s most accomplished designers and brands.
This feature originally appeared in The Detail pages of est Magazine Issue 46: Design Renaissance (pp. 254-267).
Based in Portugal, luxury furniture brand De La Espada’s favourite material to work with is solid wood. It’s written in their ethos: “The furniture that endures is that which lets the wood do the talking”. The Companions bed embodies this belief; its design is contingent on the fact that it only uses one material.
With more than 140 years of experience, Italian furniture brand Gervasoni are well acquainted with the term ‘enduring design’; an example is their Ghost collection, designed by Paola Navone. The Ghost 80 bed forms a part of this collection and, like its family members, features a removable textile cover.
Patricia Urquiola designed this sculptural bed for Italian furniture brand B&B Italia; ‘tufty’ being the adjective of ‘tuft’, which refers to a bunch or collection of threads. Patricia also designed a trio of sofas in the same style.
The Legri bed by Italian furniture company MD House appears to hover in the air, evoking feelings of suspension and lightness, which are often associated with sleep.
We’re honouring B&B Italia for a second time for their contribution to the bedroom space. Like the Legri bed, the leather-wrapped Alys bed designed by Gabriele & Oscar Buratti appears to float due to how low to the ground it sits.
Designed by Jean-Marie Massaud for iconic Italian brand Poliform, the Jacqueline bed cultivates serenity in the bedroom with its soft, pillow-like shape and visible stitching.
Italian furniture brand Baxter also engaged designer Paola Navone to create their Milano bed, which has a distinctly playful energy cultivated through its sculptural upholstered form.
Sustainable, user-friendly design is at the heart of Australian furniture brand Nau. Designed by Tom Fereday, the Nami bed is made from flat-pack solid timber, created for easy, low-impact deliveries and assemblage in small spaces.
Luxury is realised in Italian furniture company Poltrona Frau’s John-John bed, which features a padded headboard upholstered in premium leather and filled with goose down and polyester wadding.
