Some of the best DIY projects are the one that use recyclable materials. Any chance I get to reuse an item that I would normally throw away is not only exciting, but I know that I’ve maximized its use before throwing it out- which is a good feeling. So this project uses an toilet paper roll as a stamping tool to create an abstract design on napkins. Here’s how it’s done.
For this DIY, you’ll need:
- A set of white fabric napkins
- Toilet paper rolls
- Fabric or acrylic paint
- Iron
- Scrap cardboard
Step 1:
Lay a piece of scrap paper or cardboard on your surface, to protect it. This will help the paint that seeps through the fabric to not get on you clean surface. Cardboard will work, or any other piece of paper that’s fairly thick.
Step 2:
Make sure you’ve ironed out all the wrinkles in the napkin as much as possible. A wrinkle-free napkin is best when stamping.
Step 3:
Choose the paint colors you think best match the rest of your tablescape or home decor. Here’s we’re using three colors: yellow, orange and mint green. These colors are bright, fun and work well with any Spring or Summer party.
Step 4:
Lightly dip the toilet paper roll into one of the colors of paint. Stamp the roll onto the napkin, making sure that the scrap cardboard or paper is still underneath. You can try different designs here- switch the colors for variety, place the circles side-by-side, or overlap them for an untailored look. There are really no rules to stamping these napkins.
Step 5:
Repeat these steps and stamp the rest of the napkins until they are all complete. They will need time to fully dry. Fabric and acrylic paint dries pretty fast, so it should only take about 30 minutes or so.
Step 6:
Once they are dry, iron over them with another piece of fabric in between the iron surface and the painted napkin. This will seal the paint.
These napkins should be hand washed to ensure they last long, but can be used multiple times! Add a simple napkin ring or twine and place card tag to complete the look!
