Create this scene-stealing bathroom scheme with a paint effect you can DIY.

In association with Resene.

Gone are the days when powder rooms and bathrooms were mere design afterthoughts. These intimate spaces now serve as the perfect canvas for personal expression, showcasing your unique decorating flair or even a cinematic transformation.
In this butter-yellow space, the bathroom walls in Resene Athena create a backdrop that exudes timeless elegance, directing all eyes to the painted floor.

This meticulously crafted pattern mimics tiles in a design that uses Resene See The Light, Resene Ted, Resene Solitaire and Resene Epic (see instructions further down).
Layering charm and whimsy, we’ve incorporated details like the stained-glass Fun Guy lamp by Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland design studio Frangere, and Indigo Grove fabric from Martha’s Furnishing Fabrics fashioned into a chic sink skirt.

Juxtaposing these nostalgic elements, we’ve introduced contemporary touches with ABI Interiors’ stainless steel Ora basin and minimalist Milani tapware, keeping the look fresh and the functionality seamless. The subtle curves of a wooden mirror by
Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington studio Salysi adds a refined finishing touch.

How to:

This project involves overlapping paint colours, so we recommend allocating multiple days for preparation and drying time. We painted over bare plywood boards; if you are working with different flooring surfaces, consult your Resene ColorShop for advice on prepping and painting.

1. Print out the pattern guide below to keep handy while you work.

2. Clean the surface area using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Prime with Resene Quick Dry. Paint your floor with two coats of Resene Walk-on in Resene See The Light, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second. For best results, always follow Resene’s paint instructions.

3. Using a long ruler and pencil, draw a 20cm x 20cm grid across the floor. Next, measure and mark the midpoint of each square and draw a line through it. Apply Washi Advanced masking tape, pressing the edges of the tape firmly down, to mask one side of each square, creating an alternating rectangular pattern. Paint the rectangular masked areas in Resene Ted.

4. Once the paint is dry and the coverage is good, while keeping the masking tape in place, measure and mark 4cm strips within the painted Resene Ted rectangles. The position of these strips will alternate from row to row, so refer closely to your guiding pattern (from step 1). Mask around these shapes as you did in step 3, then paint the rectangular masked areas in Resene Solitaire.

5. After allowing sufficient drying time, and keeping the masking tape in place, measure and mark a 4cm square at one end of each Resene Solitaire rectangle. Use masking
tape to form the four sides of each square. Once fully masked, paint the squares in Resene Epic.

6.  Once dry, carefully peel off all the tape (some may be camouflaged by now!), revealing the tile-effect pattern.
