Aerial view of the LEGO Botanical Wave pouring out of TANK Shanghai onto the plaza

From above it looks like spilled paint. A thick, glossy flood of pink, red, orange and yellow pours out of a glowing frame on top of TANK Shanghai, runs down the facade and spreads across the plaza in curling waves, with the white cylinder of a former oil tank standing right beside it. Get closer and the paint turns into flowers: roses, tulips, sunflowers and daisies, more than 380,000 of them, every single one made of LEGO elements.

Called LEGO Botanical Wave, the installation is the outdoor centrepiece of the LEGO Bloom Exhibition, open until 29 October on Shanghai’s West Bund. It covers about 800 square metres and runs for 30 metres along the waterfront, rising in places into crests tall enough to walk through.

Soft colour, hard geometry

The setting does a lot of the work. TANK Shanghai is an art centre built inside the fuel tanks of the old Longhua Airport, converted by Beijing studio OPEN Architecture and opened in 2019. It is all round concrete volumes, heavy industry and river views, and dropping a saturated, unruly landscape onto that geometry is an easy contrast, but an effective one. The wave seems to burst out of the building and simply keep going.

The illusion of movement is the clever part. Up close nothing moves at all: each petal is locked onto its studs, and the bands of colour are built flower by flower. Step back and the whole thing reads as liquid, a frozen splash that you can walk under and photograph from inside.

Inside the tank

Indoors, an exhibition titled Where Blooms Begin brings together 18 installations by artists and LEGO enthusiasts who push the Botanicals range beyond the bouquet, combining bricks with metal, textiles and mirrors. The sequence ends in a dark, immersive room wrapped in a 360 degree screen: visitors build their own flower, scan it and watch the digital version join a garden of light that keeps growing on the walls for the length of the show.

Outside again, a second pavilion places finished Botanicals sets in everyday settings, a living room here, an office corner there, followed, inevitably, by a pop up shop. The outdoor areas are free, while the indoor spaces require a reservation through LEGO’s WeChat mini program.

We will say it plainly: this is brand marketing, and very good brand marketing. The Botanicals line, launched in 2021, is LEGO’s clearest bid for adult builders, people who buy bricks to put a bouquet on the table rather than a spaceship on the shelf, and Bloom is that strategy blown up to architectural size. What lifts it above an advert is the jump in scale. One brick rose is a pleasant thing for a windowsill. Multiplied by the hundred thousand, it stops being an object and starts behaving like terrain, and a coupling system patented in 1958 turns out to be a perfectly good material for a temporary piece of city.
