From Sydney to Seattle, we’re exploring stainless steel in the kitchen through eight standout examples.
Once only reserved for commercial kitchens, stainless steel has slowly crept into our homes. The material is hygienic, antibacterial, corrosion-resistant, durable and long-lasting – all characteristics favoured inside a busy family home. We step inside eight kitchens that honour the industrial material, each subtly nodding to its history in restaurants and bakehouses.

St Vincent’s Place by B.E Architecture
St Vincent’s Place by B.E. Architecture sees the restoration of an existing heritage home in Melbourne’s Albert Park, described by B.E Architecture as a “reinterpretation of classical references with a modern sensibility”. The kitchen, in the centre of the home overlooking the courtyard, displays a striking custom-designed stainless steel island bench with a distinct curved edge balancing its solid form. Granite floors, Grigio Armani marble and hand-finished Chestnut timber veneer joinery, soften the stainless steel structure.

Vester Voldgade by Studio David Thulstrup
Located on Vester Voldgade, one of Copenhagen’s most iconic streets, Studio David Thulstrup revised a 150 sqm top-floor apartment for a client who wanted a bright and spacious home. The open-plan kitchen features David Thulstrup’s latest design for Copenhagen-based kitchen manufacturers Reform, with stainless steel benchtops and brushed aluminium joinery. The raw, “elegantly unfiltered” nature of the stainless steel and aluminium is at home in the contemporary apartment atop Dinesen HeartOak planks.
Steel and Stone by Marie Stadsbader
Designed by Marie Stadsbader and realised by Belgian kitchen artisans Diapal, this minimal kitchen in Jabekke, Belgium, walks the line between functionality and aesthetic, combining industrial stainless steel work surfaces with raw, textural Travertine. The clean, tonal palette of steel and beige works with handleless joinery and a concealed pantry keeps clutter to a minimum.

At Home with Kelly Wearstler
Multi-disciplinary designer Kelly Wearstler’s home in Beverly Hills, California, is a capsule for the designer’s innate creativity. The stainless steel kitchen she custom designed speaks to the home’s Georgian bones, with a solid brass trim recreating profiled joinery. Classic marble, brass tapware and the Kelly Wearstler Precision pendant emphasise the sense of old-world grandeur felt throughout the home.
Brick Barn by McLaren Excell
This 20th-century barn in Berkshire, Southern England, has received a Brutalist design treatment by London architects McLaren Excell. The home features a restrained material palette, allowing the original characteristics of the building to take precedence. The rigid concrete island bench in the kitchen is the most obvious reference to Brutalism, while hardwearing stainless steel cabinetry recognises the barn’s rich agricultural history.

Where Architects Live | Suzanne Stefan
Studio DIAA principal Suzanne Stefan’s own family home sees a new build atop an original log float foundation from the early 1900s, reflecting Seattle’s traditional floating homes and houseboats. The two-tone timber and stainless steel kitchen at the rear of the floating home is the result of a collaboration between Oxbow Fabrication and Helve House’s Matt Kelly, inspired by the poetic quality of light reflecting off the surrounding water.
Woollahra House by AP Design House
Located in a classic 1930s red brick building in Sydney’s inner east, this former auction house celebrates its Art Deco origins through tactile surfaces, a curation of Italian antiques and terrazzo tiling. The kitchen pays homage to the building’s past through custom stainless steel joinery, reflecting light, which makes the space feel larger. “The space we had to play with was narrow with little natural light,” AP Design House founder Alexandra says. “I love the reflective nature of stainless steel and the light and movement it creates.”

Where Architects Live | Kyra Thomas
Architect Kyra Thomas’ home resides in a former self-storage warehouse in Queen’s Park, Sydney. Working within the original red brick boundary walls, Kyra has retained the history and charm of the warehouse while articulating a light-filled family home shaped around four garden courtyards. In the kitchen wing, the stainless steel and black stained oak kitchen create a striking contrast against the all-white interior and subtly alludes to the life the warehouse lived before.
