In this extract from Curated Style, Kerrie-Ann Jones presents an internationally inspired guide to crafting beautiful and practical interiors.
“Style is a form of self-expression. It allows us to communicate our personality, feelings, interests, quirks, and what brings us joy,” writes Sydney-based interiors expert Kerrie-Ann Jones. But if curating spaces doesn’t come instinctively, this book, showcasing highly individual homes from across the world, is your ‘how-to’ go-to. Overleaf are nine tips from its pages.
1
Consider reupholstering your existing armchairs, dining chairs and ottomans to refresh loved pieces. These Wassily chairs have been covered in a fluffy velvet fabric to create a playful, creative and unique touch. The unexpected textural element adds interest to the space.

2
Styling a room with oversized artwork above a sofa or on an empty wall provides a focal point and balances the furniture. Don’t be afraid to go big and bold with art. It often looks better and can be more appealing than artwork that is too small for a large wall area.

3
The key to introducing colour in a timeless way is to use muted, soft and desaturated tones. The muted blue tiles make this bathroom feel playful yet sophisticated.

4
Using stone offcuts to create bespoke unique furniture is a creative alternative to traditional materials such as timber. What might otherwise be an offcut thrown into landfill can become a dining table or coffee table that is also a work of art.

5
Embrace art in all forms. Art is not restricted to the walls; you can live with artful forms through objects, lighting and furniture. Just one or two unique pieces are all you need to elevate your home.

6
When curating your home, consider the balance between proportion, scale, materiality and colour. Each plays an essential role in the design language. The eye should move around a room as it does a painting, and the space should feel balanced and harmonious.

7
Repeating textures or design elements throughout the home establishes a signature that is unique to you and your home. Aged brass in the kitchen, living and bar areas is a motif in this home.

8
A great way to bring warmth to new homes is to add texture to the walls with a limewash or French wash in a neutral colour. It provides a soft and inviting atmosphere.

9
For larger rooms, balance heavy or oversized furniture pieces by adding height with horizontal elements. Tall plants, totem sculptures and floor lamps add height and balance bottom-heavy furniture.
