The couple has retreated behind the curtain and Munch has cropped off much of their bodies. His brushstrokes merge their bodies. Only a small section of the woman’s neck is even visible, she is overwhelmed, almost consumed, by her lover’s embrace. Did Munch mean for us to feel like voyeurs watching this private, intense moment?

It is hard not to be intimidated by the penetrating blue eyes of the lady in Kees van Dongen’s Woman with Blue Eyes, which seems to be ready to glare at anyone that comes within sight. The painting is exemplary of a 20th century Fauvist painting, depicting a close-up of a face of a femme fatale wearing makeup with excessive blue eye shadows, bloody red lipstick and a thick layer of peach-colored blusher.
