The winners of the 2023 Gaggenau Kitchen of the Year Design Contest have been revealed; in the Luxury Home category, Studio Prineas received the award for ‘Fisherman’s House’, while in the Multi-Residential category, Carr received the award for ‘Victoria & Burke’. The overall contest winner was Studio Prineas, who took home the ‘Best of the Best’ award for their ‘Fisherman’s House’ project.

Gaggenau’s Kitchen of the Year Design Contest recognises the best kitchen design in Australia. The awards are reserved for those who embody the Gaggenau brand: pioneers in the kitchen space, recognised worldwide for their enduring craftsmanship and avant-garde design.

Of the 12 shortlisted kitchens across the Luxury Home and Multi-Residential categories, ‘Fisherman’s House’ on the coast of Sydney stood out to the judges for its original, timeless design elements and seamless integration of Gaggenau appliances. In an exclusive interview with Studio Prineas principal Eva-Marie Prineas, we sat down to discuss this exciting achievement and how she created such a functional yet visually appealing kitchen.

What does the Gaggenau Kitchen of the Year award mean to you?

Eva-Marie Prineas: Eschewing trends in favour of longevity, our practice has always felt a strong alignment with Gaggenau – a brand that is renowned for their enduring, high-quality, functional designs. To receive recognition and acknowledgment from the broader industry and our respected peers is always a wonderful experience, especially when such recognition extends to a project like this one.

The kitchen is equally striking as it is functional. Could you share some of the key design elements in the kitchen and how they enhance the visual appeal of the space?

Eva-Marie Prineas: Our clients wanted a kitchen that would form the heart of their home from both an aesthetic and practical standpoint. The kitchen joinery and island bench have been designed as freestanding elements that allow the original volume of the cottage to be legible. The refined smoked-oak timber veneer cabinetry and matt-black benchtop provide an elegant contrast to the texture of the retained timber floors of the cottage. Integrating the Gaggenau appliances into the joinery has allowed for a seamless visual expression, ensuring that the kitchen reads elegantly regardless of whether the pocket doors are opened or closed.

Which features of the kitchen work the hardest to make it the most functional space possible in a busy family home?

Eva-Marie Prineas: The Gaggenau appliances, including the ovens, microwave, coffee machine, and fridge-freezer, make the kitchen a multi-functional space that the family can enjoy using. The oversized island bench is also an efficient element, containing the sink, cooktop, preparation, and seating area in one singular volume.

What makes Gaggenau your go-to brand when it comes to kitchen appliances?

Eva-Marie Prineas: The history and quality of the Gaggenau brand align with our studio ethos of timeless, quality design. Gaggenau appliances were selected at the very beginning of the kitchen design process, both for their exceptional functional quality and their refined, elegant aesthetics.

All humility aside, why do you think you won in the Best of the Best category?

Eva-Marie Prineas: It’s a challenge crafting a family kitchen that is both elegant and functional, but we achieved both with the inclusion of Gagganau’s appliances.

And lastly, what are you most looking forward to about your trip to Europe?

Eva-Marie Prineas: Travelling is often one of the most inspirational and important parts of a designer’s life — an opportunity to learn from different cultures and observe the concept of home and the role it plays in our wellbeing from other parts of the world.

We look forward to visiting the Gaggenau factory in Lipsheim, France – to be inspired by their craftsmanship – and also visiting EuroCucina in Milan to get a glimpse into exciting new developments in kitchen appliances.
