Hugh-Jones Mackintosh marry coastal shades, eclectic furniture and arresting art to ‘weave’ a new home into an existing one.

After years of moving around to different locations, a young family chanced upon this four-bedroom, three-bathroom home on Sydney’s Harbour and immediately saw its potential as a long-term post. However, they knew the home would need a complete interior overhaul to put down roots. Cue: Sydney-based interior design studio Hugh-Jones Mackintosh.

Originally deemed “unimaginative” and “bland” by the design team, Weave House now evokes words such as “polished”, “eclectic”, “warm” and “dynamic”; a home much better suited to its coastal surroundings.

A New Look

While the owners fell in love with the location and size of Weave House, the interiors did not match up to what they had envisioned for their permanent family home. With an expansive site and tranquil water views too hard to pass up, they decided to enlist Hugh-Jones Mackintosh for an interior facelift. “It wasn’t hard for us to see how we could elevate the mood and ‘weave’ a new look into the existing home,” co-director Justine Hugh-Jones says.

Connection to the Outdoors

The new home nestles into the established garden, creating a seamless connection between inside and out. Notably, the main kitchen-dining-living area opens onto a spacious lawn and pool area, creating the impression of one continuous space. “The outdoor spaces needed to appear like an extension of the indoor spaces; they needed to be dynamic,” co-director Katrina Mackintosh says. “The muted blues and greens in the furniture echo the surrounding garden and pool, as well as the interior palette.”

Each piece of furniture is highly considered; the custom dining table, for instance, was made round rather than rectangular to open up more space. Pendant: Apparatus Trapeze 7; dining chairs: De La Espada Elliot; artwork: Meg Walters.

The wine room is the owners’ favourite room in the house. Crafted out of an existing kids’ playroom, the space features built-in leather banquette seating, ample wine storage and a bar inset with brilliant green stone; a clever re-use of space. The space also features the Grazia&Co Iva stools and Tigmi Trading table.

The Palette and Furniture

The chosen palette features coastal shades such as marine blues, natural timbers and soft neutrals with energetic pops of colour – mustard yellow, blush pink and terracotta. Incorporating texture and warmth into this palette ensured the interior was infused with “light, vitality and contemporary ambience,” Justine says.

The palette materialises in an all-new collection of furniture, which Katrina describes as “eclectic” and “shapely”. While the curation did need to cater for a young family, the clients were by no means opposed to a few statement investment pieces; calling on designers such as India Mahdavi, B&B Italia and &Tradition to realise a considered blend of functional and sophisticated.

The Art

Hugh-Jones Mackintosh and the client collaborated on choosing the home’s coveted art collection. Respected names such as Nicola Moss and Meg Walters reinvigorate spaces through colour and emotion, complemented by the palette and furniture selections.

“There is a sense of youthful vitality at every turn,” Justine says while referencing the bedroom spaces. The primary bedroom pictured features a playful palette of blue and gold, enhanced by varying textures and shapes.
