The craggy ancient Fig trees and shimmering ocean of Rushcutters Bay in inner-city Sydney set the scene for this family home. While nature runs wild outside, the interiors of a renovated 1980s apartment are a welcome antidote, inspiring peace and restraint.
The design brief was simple: to create an inviting and timeless space unbound by the trap of fleeting trends. Georgina Wilson, founder and principal architect of Georgina Wilson Associates, embraced these guidelines wholeheartedly, leading to a cohesive blend of luxurious materiality executed with refined craftsmanship.
Quite literally starting from the ground up, Wilson and her team first selected the flooring as the foundation of the design. “European Oak parquetry floors in ‘Graupa’ from Tongue & Groove were the first element we chose for the palette, setting the tone for our warm, neutral theme,” Wilson notes. The subtle texture and Parisian-inspired herringbone pattern bring the desired classicism and anchor the aesthetic to ensure a sense of depth in every room.
From here, Wilson has created a flowing layout between the living spaces, building out a material palette to complement the timber floors. In one corner, a curving and articulated tan leather banquette adds additional dining space. Venetian plaster wraps the walls in a dreamy, cloud-like ivory, and creamy Calacatta Oro rounds out the luxurious textures. The sense of tactility and subtle patterning create a layering effect that elevates the home’s overall aesthetic.
