Tom Mark Henry blend traditional and contemporary design elements to transform a Mosman family home.
Located in Sydney’s Mosman neighbourhood, this double-fronted family home by Tom Mark Henry takes on the client’s personality while preserving the traditional architecture. The character-filled yet contemporary spaces explore a vibrant tonal palette and textural materiality, celebrating the home’s pre-existing design features to create “versatility and practicality”.

The kitchen features the Brodware Neu England kitchen set in brushed Nordic brass.
Designed for a busy young family, Tom Mark Henry introduced a contemporary sensibility to the Mosman Residence while maintaining a traditional layout. Checkerboard stone tiles in the hallway and kitchen call on the feeling of a grand country home, and walnut timber floorboards and custom joinery throughout the house echo the original finishes.
Tom Mark Henry weren’t afraid of using colour throughout the Mosman residence, as seen in the spectrum of blue tones. The hallway ceilings and walls are enveloped in a cornflower blue, creating a moment of calm upon entry, while the main bedroom is characterised by deep navy tones and crisp white accents that emphasise relaxation and privacy. The living area further balances traditional and contemporary design, with unconventional cornflower blue accents becoming a focal point against the warm white and sisal carpet backdrop.

Textural patterns throughout capture the home’s sense of warmth and whimsy, such as the striped upholstery in the dining area and the rattan joinery. Tom Mark Henry have also used cloud wallpaper along the stairway – creating visual interest that both grown-ups and little people to enjoy at once.

The cornflower blue walls in the hallway contrast the patterned stone floor tiles.

The main bedroom features the timber Resident Offset stool, New Works Kizu table lamp in white marble, Society Inc Lure pull wardrobe handles and Lucy Montgomery fringe cushion.

Custom joinery in the children’s bedroom imbues a sense of the whimsy.
