A modernist home forges a strong connection with the valley and its environment from its hilltop perch in Zwevegem, Belgium.

Anchored in a philosophy informed by the site’s verdant landscape, DO House is realised through a design language where architectural principles are drawn from nature. A modernist approach is also explored by Simon de Burbure Architects, which shapes the form and materiality of the home. These notes are derived from an adjacent iconic house that belonged to the owner’s father and was designed by the renowned Belgian architect Ivan Van Mossevelde. “The clients expressed a desire for a home that would echo some of that architectural spirit; modernism rooted in nature, modest yet powerful in its gestures. They longed for openness and light, but also intimacy”, Simon de Burbure Architects, Interior Decorator Emilienne Cordie explains.

Serving as a retreat for a vibrant middle-aged couple, the commodious residence measures 890 square meters, hosting their adult children on weekends, with its four bedrooms, various living spaces, and indoor wellness space that includes a connecting gym, pool house and an indoor pool. Throughout the design, the couple’s energy is personified, which Cordie describes as “grounded yet dynamic, and their home reflects that same balance.” She adds by saying the clients had “a strong desire for a natural flow, a simplicity that would not feel minimal, but lived-in and timeless.”

The kitchen cabinetry is dressed in a rich chocolate timber veneer, which is balanced with the stainless-steel island and vintage T-chairs by Katavolos, Kelley and Littell.

A unified design language is captured through the holistic approach that intertwines architecture, interiors and landscape, enabling the house to blend serenely into the surrounding wilderness. “We worked closely with a landscape architect so that the building would feel gently nested in its site, rather than placed upon it. Every decision, materials, proportions, apertures, was considered in dialogue with the broader environment”, Cordie says. The floorplan’s sequencing is effortlessly fluid and open, as the vast glazing invites transparency with nature and distils a connection with a 360-degree view over the valley.

A delicate balance between the duality of richness and restraint is practised through material choices, creating a refined yet meditative quality throughout the home. Mirroring its tree-lined surroundings, the linear bricks reflect the various wooden tones from the valley, helping the house to recede into the landscape. This deep monochromatic palette extends inside, with chocolate-stained timber covering the floors, walls, and cabinetry, softened by acid-stained concrete floors, brushed stainless-steel kitchen island, and subtly textured walls. The lushness of the tree canopies is also emulated by emerald-green marble in the bathrooms, which brings a sense of tranquillity to the spaces.

Reflecting on what Cordie describes as a privilege to design a home that is personal to the family, she concludes by saying, “architecture is not only about form, but about how people live, gather, and find beauty in the everyday.”

The indoor pool on the lower level connects with the outdoor pond, is designed with an acoustic ceiling to create a serene and meditative space. A pair of Cassina Utrecht chairs designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is upholstered in an outdoor textile and is paired by the poolside.
