In the living room, Child Studio custom-designed sofas, a daybed in Pierre Frey fabric, a vintage North African Tuareg rug, and a vintage 1960s Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand Tabouret Berger stool.

In the distinguished neighbourhood of Belgravia, London, a Georgian townhouse stands redefined with nostalgic European modernism.

Owned by an entrepreneur and art collector, the three-storey residence is generously portioned at nearly 300 square metres. “We focused on traditional techniques and natural materials while the overall atmosphere is cosy and serene,” Child Studio founder Alexy Kos says.

The designers commenced working with the two upper levels. A voluminous double-height ceiling was formed by exposing the mansard roof, where the curved slopes of the slanted roof are accentuated with the tactile plaster finish. This directional move allowed a mezzanine level to be integrated, connecting the space to the outdoor terrace through a spiralled iron staircase. Taking advantage of the soaring five-metre ceiling height, a wall is lined in bespoke mahogany cabinetry, shelving the owner’s extensive book collection on art and design inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s Parisian library.

The library nook features a Child Studio custom-designed low table in cherry wood, a pair of stools in cherry wood and cotton fabric by Pierre Frey, a table lamp with a black ceramic base and parchment lampshade with leather stitch, and mahogany cabinetry.

In the lounge, mahogany panels and shutters grace the walls, creating an intimate and insulated space reminiscent of the Milanese Villa Necchi. Various elements subtly balance this richness, including a custom-designed mohair daybed, Art Deco and Modernist lamps, and a 20th-century African coffee table. “This layered mix of treasured objects from different eras is crucial for us to create a cosy, lived-in atmosphere,” Child Studio founder Che Huang says.

In the primary bedroom, a mahogany curved-shaped headboard is the focal feature custom-designed by Child Studio. Mahogany continues to be echoed through the room, applied to the panelled wall that conceals the walk-in-wardrobe behind the bed, window shutters, and custom-designed stool and daybed that gesture Jules Leleu’s Art Deco designs. These are perfectly balanced with the heritage details of the fireplace encased in travertine that centres the room.

Emerald is introduced and used indulgently in selected spaces. The vanity and bathtub are carved from singular Verde Guatemala marble blocks in the primary bathroom with soft curved forms. The stone is also liberally applied to dress the floor and walls, appearing as one solid piece with the elements within the space. Meanwhile, in the guest bedroom, the panelled walls are soaked in an Emerald velvet fabric.

Reflecting on the design of the Belgravia Townhouse, Huang concludes, “Focusing on quality and comfort, we aimed to create an effortless and relaxing home that serves as an understated backdrop to the owner’s life, with every detail tailored to their needs.”
