While the typical approach to a large double block in Melbourne would be to design two separate homes, Architecture Works director Steven Kyzintas took a different route; instead, creating a low-lying building on a long horizontal plane. Making way for the ‘Gallery House’, Architecture Works have embraced the lush native surroundings through openings that ‘picture frame’ the garden’s focal points.
The walnut kitchen features a striking Calacatta stone island bench with V-ZUG cooking appliances, the and an integrated dishwasher and refrigerator.
Steven Kyzintas says the Gallery House’s brief was inherently simple: creating a single storey home that blurs the lines between inside and outside. The family home is laid out over a single level, with a series of cleverly-integrated courtyards throughout, granting each living space and bedroom a perfectly captured vista of the outdoors. These large expanses of glass flood the home with natural light, in turn cultivating a relaxed internal atmosphere that invites the outside in.
A classic palette of charred timber, rendered cement, natural stone and glass forms the essence of the home, accompanied by custom-designed furniture and statement light fixtures. “As the house is large in its horizontal plane rather than vertical, we consciously used a restrained yet sophisticated material palette to help strengthen its form,” Architecture Works director Steven Kyzintas explains. This timeless selection of materials is robust enough to withstand family life while also providing a gallery-like backdrop for the client’s ever-growing collection of artwork.

Steven says although the large house needed to have enough space to accommodate family gatherings, equal consideration was given to carving out intimate spaces for the owners. The primary ensuite offers a serene bathing experience, immersing you in the sculptural gardens and evoking a tranquillity akin to somewhere far from home.
