When was the last time you cleaned your oven? While most people know that they should do it, most don’t do it often enough. And you really should – cooking your food in a greasy, dirty mess isn’t the best idea, and if any of those bits start smoking they will give your food a gross charcoal taste. There’s no need to be intimidated, though… here’s an easy, natural way to get your oven looking cleaner than ever.

Quite an improvement, right? The key is to let the mixture sit overnight so it can attack the grime while you sleep.

Homemade natural oven cleaner

Now let’s get started. Here’s what you’ll need to make a natural homemade oven cleaner:

  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • 3/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice
  • Spoon
  • Spray bottle
  • Paper towels
  • An old rag (not pictured)
  • Rubber gloves (not pictured)

Directions to make the natural oven cleaner:

Step 1: Mix vinegar and baking soda

Begin by pouring 1/2 cup of the vinegar into the baking soda. Do this very slowly, otherwise, it will fizz all over the counter.

Step 2: Add the lemon juice

Slowly add the lemon juice, and mix everything together thoroughly. It should look something like the photo above… the consistency of a watery paste.

Step 3: Test the cleaning solution

Next, put on a pair of rubber gloves. Rub the mix around the bottom and sides of the oven. Rub it around with your gloved hand until it covers every surface except the heating tube (wipe it off with a damp cloth if you happen to spill some on it). Close the oven and let it sit overnight.

Step 4: Add the rest of the vinegar in the morning

The next morning, pour the remaining vinegar (1/4 cup) into a spray bottle and fill the rest with water. Spray the entire oven to wet and loosen the dried paste.

Step 5: Wipe

Using an old rag, begin to wipe up the paste. Rinse out the rag in the sink periodically, and continue wiping up the paste until it is gone. Finish by running a dry paper towel over every surface.

Conclusion

And that’s it-you’re finished! It’s not perfect, but it’s leaps and bounds better than it was when I started. And I love that it didn’t involve using any harsh, smelly chemicals… in fact, the lemon juice made it smell pretty good! Happy cleaning everyone.
