Their forward-thinking space lives a dream of simplicity, authenticity and environmental connection.

The simpler life
“As our homes continue to become places in which we forge deeper connections with each other, the simple moments in life and the environment, we see kitchen design moving in the direction of simplicity, longevity and honesty,” says Thomas Seear-Budd, co-founder of Wellington architecture practice Seear-Budd Ross with James Ross and Sophie Hamer. Conveying robust permanence, this trio’s forward- thinking kitchen is set within a coastal home with a view of waves and windswept dunes. Solid, rammed-earth walls meet open volumes in this space that invites the ever-changing natural light and invigorating atmosphere outside in.
Grounded gathering
Seear-Budd Ross has selected natural materials for their design forecast that echo the raw tones and textures of the beach, offset by stainless steel Fisher & Paykel appliances to softly reflect the light. This leading tech includes a dual-fuel cooker within a recycled rimu bench (which teams a five-burner gas cooktop with a nine-function convection oven, ideal for gatherings with any number of friends and family), beneath a rangehood integrated into a custom sandblasted stainless steel shroud, and beside tall DishDrawers sized for platters, large dishes and maximum capacity when entertaining. The result is a multi-sensory experience that’s sophisticated yet easy-care and hard-wearing.
On summer nights, the interior amenities extend to the outdoor dining space, supported by an easily accessible Fisher & Paykel CoolDrawer you can convert to a fridge, pantry or freezer, plus a Fisher & Paykel DCS Grill with side burners that let you prep your sides at the same time as your mains.
Relax & enjoy
“In this kitchen, time slows down, and no one has to worry about sticky fingers or sandy feet,” says Sophie. The colours and textures all support a relaxed feel, making this a lovely space in which to enjoy daily duties and rituals.
A range of storage types are provided to facilitate this ease, from more open and exposed to subtly recessed and concealed. This allows tools to be kept within reach or on display, along with decorative pieces that bring meaning to your world. For storage of food and drinks, a Fisher & Paykel column fridge and freezer (both with Variable Temperature Zones that allow you to alter individual compartments to create the optimal conditions) stand alongside a Fisher & Paykel column wine cabinet with a 91-bottle capacity to please your resident wine collector.
“This kitchen celebrates our connection to both a place and the process of preparing and eating meals together,” says James. “Here, our senses are fully engaged, so we enjoy not only the aroma, appearance, taste and texture of our food, but also the visual and tactile texture, light and shadows of the space and its surroundings.”
