1. Why the Crochet Flowers 2020 Project?
As you know, in my blog I use to write about one of my favorite hobbies, crocheting, about the crochet projects in which I’m involved and about the works of other crocheters or designers that I love. And you also know that I don’t use to talk about me or comment my opinions about anything here. That’s why it has taken me some time to make the decision to break this habit and it’s related to something that really worries me.
Everything can be summed up in an idea that disturbs me: The fact that we are going to give our children a worse planet Earth than the one that we’ve received from the previous generation. I think that such situation had never happened before in human history and, simply, I cannot help feeling concerned. In the acts of my daily life and regarding my closest circle of family and friends, which is almost all of my action scope, I’m consistent with this concern; it’s impossible for me to do otherwise.
Although I’ve noticed that most of the people at individual level also recognize this same fact and are committed in some degree with a more sustainable human activity that contributes to mitigate the effects of climate change, I also realize that both governments, international institutions and companies (the great and essential actors for the planet sustainability to become really effective) seem not to take conclusive steps or do not seem committed in the same direction.
The quantity of devastating weather events, the increase in its frequency and damage throughout the planet in recent times (devastating fires, windstorms, snow and hail of dimensions not seen before, global temperatures increasing, our beaches gradually receding to as the sea level rises …), the suffering for many communities of people and the degradation of ecosystems can no longer be overlooked. I know I’m not saying anything new. That’s why the conclusions of last year Climate Summit in Madrid have been so disappointing. And now all the hopes to reach truly effective action commitments are once again placed at the next Climate Summit in Glasgow in 2020. Any possible agreement is being developed at a snail’s pace, but the reality of the facts urges us to accelerate our steps.
That disturbing idea that concerns me (the fact that we are going to give our children a worse planet Earth than the one that we’ve received from our parents) has led me to think of a way to make it visible in the way I can do it well: crocheting, and more specifically crocheting flowers. I imagined how lovely it would be to flood social networks with crocheted flowers as a peaceful rebellion and a wake-up call that is within my/our reach to help spread the need to work for a more sustainable style life at a faster pace and realize the commitment we all have to our children. This is how the Crochet Flowers Project 2020 was taking shape in my mind.
Then I began to consider if it would be a good idea to “contaminate” my blog about crochet with point of views that have nothing to do with it. This has been my dilemma during last weeks. Finally I thought it was worth to go ahead. In the worst case, it would not hurt anyone to see crocheted flowers and find patterns to crochet them. 😀
1. ¿Por qué el Proyecto Flores a Ganchillo 2020?
Como sabéis, en mi blog escribo sobre uno de mis hobbies preferidos, el ganchillo, sobre los proyectos de ganchillo que voy realizando y sobre los trabajos de otras tejedoras o creadoras que me gustan. Y también sabéis que no tengo la costumbre de hablar mucho sobre mí o comentar mis opiniones a cerca de nada aquí. Es por eso que me ha llevado algún tiempo tomar la decisión de romper esta costumbre y tiene que ver con algo que verdaderamente me preocupa.
Todo se puede resumir en una idea muy perturbadora para mí: El hecho de que vamos a dejar a nuestros hijos un planeta peor del que hemos recibido de la generación anterior. Creo que nunca antes en la historia se había producido un situación similar y, simplemente, no puedo evitar sentirme concernida. En los actos de mi vida cotidiana y respecto a mi círculo más próximo de familiares y amigos, que es casi todo mi ámbito de alcance, soy coherente con esta preocupación; es imposible para mí no hacerlo así.
Aunque vengo observando que la mayor parte de las personas a nivel individual también reconoce este mismo hecho y está comprometida en algún grado con una actividad humana más sostenible que contribuya a paliar los efectos del cambio climático, percibo que tanto gobiernos, como instituciones internacionales y empresas (los grandes e imprescindibles actores para que la sostenibilidad se haga realmente efectiva) parecen no dar pasos concluyentes y realmente comprometidos en el mismo sentido.
La cantidad de eventos climatológicos devastadores, el incremento de su frecuencia por todo el planeta en los últimos tiempos (incendios devastadores, tormentas de viento, nieve y granizo de dimensiones no vistas antes, incremento de las temperaturas a nivel global, nuestras playas retrocediendo paulatinamente a medida que sube el nivel del mar…), el sufrimiento para muchas comunidades de personas y la degradación de los ecosistemas son ya insoslayables. Sé que no estoy diciendo nada nuevo. Es por ello por lo que las conclusiones de la Cumbre del Clima de Madrid del pasado año han resultado tan decepcionantes. Y ahora todas las esperanzas para llegar a compromisos de actuación verdaderamente efectivos están nuevamente puestas en la próxima Cumbre del Clima en Glasgow de 2020. Cualquier posible acuerdo va gestándose a paso de tortuga, pero la realidad de los hechos nos marca ya otro ritmo.
La perturbadora idea que me concierne (el hecho de que vamos a dejar a nuestros hijos un planeta peor del que recibimos de nuestros padres) me ha llevado a pensar en una vía para hacerla visible del modo que mejor sé hacerlo: tejiendo, y más específicamente, tejiendo flores. Imaginé lo maravilloso que sería poder inundar las redes de flores tejidas a ganchillo como una rebelión pacífica y una llamada de atención que está a mi/nuestro alcance para ayudar a difundir la necesidad de trabajar a un ritmo más acelerado por un estilo de vida más sostenible y el compromiso que todos tenemos de legar a nuestros hijos un mundo mejor. Así fue tomando forma en mi cabeza el Proyecto Flores de Ganchillo 2020.
Después empecé a considerar si sería conveniente “contaminar” un blog sobre ganchillo con ideas y opiniones que nada tienen que ver con ello. Éste ha sido mi dilema durante las primeras semanas de este año. Finalmente he pensado que merecía la pena intentarlo. En el peor de los casos, a nadie le haría daño ver flores a ganchillo y encontrar patrones para tejerlas. 😀
2. What is Crochet Flowers 2020 Project?
Well, as simple as this: using fearsome weapons such us crochet hooks, yarn and scissors, the challenge is crocheting a flower per week along 2020. So I’ll get a total of 52 crochet flowers in last week of December.
I’m going to publish each crochet flower weekly on my Facebook and Instagram accounts, and also link to #Crochet_Flowers_2020 hashtag to gather all the flowers in the better way for you to find them. Here in the blog, I’ll write one or two monthly posts to collect the crochet flowers made during each month and details about patterns and material used in each one. This means that all the content is going to be accessible for you here.
At the end of the year, I’ll make a virtual wall with the crochet flowers made throughout 2020 and share it here as well as on my Facebook and Instagram accounts.

2. ¿Qué es el Proyecto Flores a Ganchillo 2020?
Bueno, tan simple como esto: usando armas tan temibles como agujas de ganchillo, hilo y tijeras, el desafío consiste en tejer una flor a la semana a lo largo de 2020. De este modo tendré un total de 52 flores de ganchillo en la última semana de Diciembre.
Publicaré cada flor a ganchillo semanalmente en mis cuentas de Facebook e Instagram, con enlace al hashtag #Crochet_Flowers_2020 de Instagram para agruparlas de modo que puedas encontrarlas todas mejor. Aquí en el blog, escribiré una o dos entradas mensuales en las que reuniré las flores a ganchillo hechas durante el mes, así como todos los detalles relacionados con los patrones y el material utilizado en cada una de ellas. Eso significa que todo el contenido va a estar accesible para todas aquí.
Al finalizar el año, haré un mural virtual con las flores de ganchillo tejidas a lo largo de 2020 que compartiré con vosotras aquí en el blog, así como en mis cuentas de Facebook e Instagram.

Well, I’m not going to talk only about flowers today. There are other crochet projects on my work table right now. For example, I had already shown you this remaining stash at the end of last year. A basic Sport yarn which is currently discontinued, balls of 50g in each color and a total of 22 balls.
Bueno, no voy a hablar sólo de flores hoy. Tengo otros proyectos de ganchillo en mi mesa de trabajo. Por ejemplo, a finales del pasado año ya os había mostrado estos ovillos que habían permanecido totalmente olvidados durante años. Un hilo tipo Sport básico que ya está fuera de stock. Consistía en 2 ovillos de 50 g en cada color y un total de 22 bolas.
These colors look great all together, so I’ve started crocheting a multicolored blanket in a zig-zag stitch with all of them. In next posts, I will tell you more about this project that is being very comfortable to crochet in this cold time of the year.
Los colores se ven muy bien todos juntos, así que he empezado a tejer una manta multicolor en una puntada zig-zag con todos ellos. En próximos posts os iré contando más sobre este proyecto que está siendo muy agradable de tejer en esta fría época del año.
