Anker Jordan Residence is a multi-generational bringing together family retreat in parametric design. Designed by Scalar Architecture on the Ossipee Lake peninsula, New Hampshire. This 3000 square foot cottage is formed by two prisms joined together, providing an elegant and singular resolution to multiple desires and concerns.
The project’s greatest challenges are passive climate response, adaptability for multigenerational living, and respect for the stunning surroundings: including lakes, forests, and the White Mountains beyond.
This family site by the lake has its challenges. Beyond their climate, topography and vegetation – all orientations offer different opportunities that require reconciliation such as having a northerly view, infrequent sun exposure from the south, summer winds from the west, and winter northwest, while the southeast and south must be protected.
The client wants to invest in this project for three generations to enjoy, and recognition of the interdependence of all generations. To get the most out of it, families like the degree to which the space can be used as a continuous series of gatherings, while allowing for more isolated moments of isolation and play. The architects developed prism elements to maximize interior volume while providing high passive environmental efficiency and minimal impact on the site.
The folding roof simultaneously displays views of the south and north, the management of rainfall and snow, and the summer westerly winds. The inside of the prism is marked as cells that are connected to each other to produce a complex social landscape. The combined second prism halves create a hidden but connected world for young adults occupying the intermediate level. Underneath, the ground floor is given over to where grandparents live.
