Working with mercerised cotton on ply board, Angela Whitney crafts woven designs that inject colour and joy into her own life —and the lives of others. Based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington, her background as a visual designer is evident in her high-impact textile art pieces that make a singular statement, but also look graphic fantastic when grouped together. Angela, who works from a studio in Lyall Bay, says that even though the colour, materials, pattern, texture and tension invariably collide in her work in an upbeat, joyful fashion, the process transports her to a place of calm in an increasingly noisy and chaotic world. A recent exhibition at the NZ Art Show only confirmed her feeling that she’s now in the right realm creatively. We agree. It’s a magic intersection and difficult to imagine not feeling lighter and brighter when one or two of Angela’s striped-right compositions come home.
