Welcome to the light show. We thought it was high time we shed some light (excuse the pun) on the sophisticated, sculptural and statement floor lamp lighting that is experiencing a moment in the interior spotlight. As designers’ experiment with a combination of materials and visual effects, we bring you some of our favourite optical beauties, all crafted to create an elegantly defined silhouette that’s fit for the modern home.
We’ve taken our inspiration from The Finger Wharf Apartment by Architect Prineas and rounded up some classic and contemporary front-runners. Bringing a new perspective to the lighting game, our selection of luminaires range from the monochromatic and linear to the ethereal and cloud-like.
Articolo’s Lumi Floor Lamp
Masculine elegance meets handcrafted perfection in this Lumi floor lamp in grey by local talent Articolo. We love the contrasting mix of subtle smoky grey glass and sturdy matte black stand.
Douglas + Bec
A vision of detailed craftsmanship and unique materiality. Design duo Douglas & Bec’s Arch Floor Lamp is a real pleasure to look at – on or off. Light breaks through the spaces between each panel creating a beautiful linear light output- genius.
Bec Brittain
New York lighting and product designer Bec Brittain is one to watch. Driven by a love of luxurious materials, intuitive forms and forward-thinking technology Brittain delivers the quirky allure of this Helix Floor Lamp. Available from Criteria.
Bellevue Brass Floor Lamp
Scandinavian great Arne Jacobsen designed the Bellevue Floor Lamp early on in his impressive career. Jacobsen’s preference for graceful lines and simple, organic forms are easily recognisable in the architecturally timeless Bellevue Floor Lamp Lighting. Available from Great Dane.
Michael Anastassiades x FLOS
Designed by the new master of light; Michael Anastassiades for FLOS, Captain Flint (available at Euroluce) comprises of a painted steel or brushed brass stem and reflector cone diffuser, and white Carrara or black Marquina marble base.
Lampadaire Trois
More of a sculptural piece than your average reading floor lamp lighting, the Serge Mouille Lampadaire 3 Bras is an absolute classic that dates back to 1953. Available at Cult.
Lee Broom’s Optical Lamp
Make a style statement with Lee Broom’s Optical Floor Lamp. The young designer behind the immersive installations at Salone del Mobile, Broom applied Op Art graphic patterns as the inspiration for this modern shapeshifter.
Akari A3
Akari is a Japanese term that means both ‘light’ as illumination but also implying the idea of weightlessness. The Akari Light Sculptures (1951) by Isamu Noguchi are paper lanterns that harmoniously blend Japanese handcraft and modernist forms. Available from Living Edge.
Jaime Hayon x Parachilna
Distinctly Hayon in its playfulness and personality, the Lightoread P lamps for Parachilna feature metallic shades that bounce light off of shallow domes. We’re particularly fond of the red marble version.
