refresh home decor for summer

It’s almost summer… finally! With each new season, I love making small changes to my home decor to keep things looking fresh and seasonal. It’s also a good way to make sure you don’t get bored of your decor. I’m talking mostly simple swaps and small updates that don’t cost a lot, though occasionally you might want to spend a bit on something that you can re-use every year.

When refreshing my home for any season, I always keep the idea of hygge in mind because hygge isn’t just for the colder months. Your home can be just as cosy and inviting in summer. Besides that, it’s all about embracing the current season and for summer that means keeping things light, bright and fresh.

Switch up you bed linen — I love linen bedding in summer as it keeps you cool and looks light and fresh. An equally good fabric for summer bedding is cotton muslin which is breathable and adds lots of texture with it’s crinkled look.

Think about smells — this is often overlooked but smells matter especially in the hot, sweaty months! The best way to do this is by keeping windows open. I also love to use summer inspired scented candles because candles aren’t just for winter. Think citrus scents like lemon and orange or coconut-ty smells that transport you to the beach.

Lighten up those window coverings — summer is all about long days, sunshine and natural light. So opt for window coverings like sheer roman blinds or curtains in fabrics like linen and cotton. Even if not in the bedroom for privacy reasons, try this in living areas.

Change your sofa covers — if you have spare sofa covers, change them for the lightest version both in colour and fabric. I have linen covers which I use in the warmer months and a thicker fabric for winter. You can also get loose linen covers to drape over any sofa which could be an alternative if you don’t have spare covers or if your sofa covers aren’t removable.

Add some seasonal greenery — this could be things like a summer wreath or some seasonal flowers or foliage. You could also add some new plants if you’re a plant fan. Alternatively, dried summer florals will work well too. And there’s no need to hold back – the more seasonal greenery and flowers, the better.

Change up your cushions and throws — linen, muslin and crinkled cotton are all cool fabrics that will add plenty of texture to your living space while keeping you comfy.

Paint your walls — white or very pale coloured walls are great for summer as they maximise light and give your home a fresh feel. And painting is such a quick and affordable way to brighten up any room anytime you need to.

Move the indoors out — in winter you want to bring the outdoors in and in summer it’s the opposite. Take things like cosy throws and cushions to your patio or garden seating area and/or lay down a rug. Light up the outside with candles and you can even sneak a sheepskin or two to help stay warm and cosy long in to the night.

Swap your living room rug — natural materials like jute or cotton are perfect for summer, especially if you have thick pile rugs otherwise. Of course this could mean buying a rug but it will serve you summer after summer for years to come. Alternatively, I sometimes opt for a bare floor look in summer for a cleaner look.
