simple diy bookmarks

simple diy bookmarksBookmarks are like socks in this house.  No matter how many we have, they disappear after a while.  Since all three of us read a lot, we always need bookmarks.  Once again I’m running short on bookmarks so I made some more.

This time I choose to use fabrics because I love the tactile feel of them.  Also I wanted to try a completely different material from what I’ve used in the past.  One of my favourite materials in the past was brass which also make lovely bookmarks but it was time for a change.  If you want to take a look, here are my minimal DIY brass bookmarks.

Back to these simple DIY bookmarks that are so easy to make and they look so cute!  All you need is some popsicle sticks and leather and felt scraps and you’re good to go.  I’ve made a few for myself plus extras to give as gifts.  Whenever I gift a book or even a notebook (to my stationery loving friends), I love adding in a handmade bookmark and it’s always appreciated.

Materials:
slim popsicle sticks (US readers here)
leather/felt/faux leather
fabric glue (US reader here)
a round object (to draw your circle)
large fabric scissors

I used leather, faux leather and felt because I wanted different textures and I had bits of all of them lying around. You can use any of these or all depending on what you have.

1. draw two circles for each bookmark on the back of your fabric – my circles are approx 4.5cms/1.75 inches in diameter. you can go smaller if you prefer.
2. cut out the circles (this is the trickiest part unless you have a cricut machine then lucky you!)
3. glue the popsicle stick to one of the circles
4. glue the other circle on top
5. place under a heavy object to make sure it sticks
6. once stuck, trim the circles to tidy the edges

Here’s a short video in case you prefer to watch:

As you can see these simple diy bookmarks are really easy to make.  You can get creative with different leather textures or even different fabrics as long as they’re fairly thick.

I went for larger circles as I like the over-sized look but you can make smaller ones for small books or for your notebooks and planners.

You could even go for a two fabric look with these bookmarks – leather on one side and felt on the other in matching colours.  I considered this but I didn’t have both leather and felt pieces in the same colour.

What do you think? Will you make these simple DIY bookmarks?
