Working within a Heritage Conservation is no easy feat when it comes to a substantial home transformation. Add to that an original dwelling spread out across numerous small, detached rooms across multiple levels and a client brief for a modern home with spaces to flow easily and you have yourself quite the challenge. But if Georgina Wilson struggled with bringing this run-down Paddington terrace into contemporary comforts then it certainly doesn’t show. Instead the renewed home charms you instantly, inviting you to peek inside.

Filtered light plays beautifully on the floorboards and bespoke joinery both now running the length of the open plan dining and living room. The new open space highlights a double fireplace along the common wall and the cleverly designed joinery picks the same line as the marble mantels, creating a wonderful connection the length of the room. Furnished in elegant and classic European furniture, this communal space sets a sumptuous tone.
The crisp white palette creates a calm and airy feel and provides the perfect backdrop for the display of dramatic and modern art pieces. Continuing through to the open kitchen is perhaps where the jewel in the crown greets us with the magnificently shaped island sitting centre stage, featuring superb timber panelling detail and a Calcutta island bench top. The island shape and finish details truly enhance the minimalist kitchen and entertaining hub.

At the rear of this level a casual lounge area furnished in soft pastels creates a calm place to relax and unwind. A fireplace to cosy around also resides here and in the summer months glass-stacking doors open to a BBQ and courtyard, gently bringing the outdoors in.
The stairs leading to the both upper and lower levels re-emphasise the sleek wood detailing seen in the kitchen. Bathrooms on every level are tonal and understated, creating a tranquil feel. Existing heritage elements have not only been repaired but also enlivened, and every space has been utilised. The clever relocation of the laundry to the lower level gives generous space to the bedrooms and living, and a streamlined study nook with concealed storage rests snugly in a stair alcove. The end result is a relaxed modern home that provides functional design through its light-filled and versatile spaces – all right in the heart of Paddington.
