Ikea kitchen cabinet doors ash wood

Everyone knows that kitchens are expensive. That doesn’t stop most of us from dreaming of that perfect kitchen, even though it may feel like it’s out of reach. But there is one way to cut the costs considerably without compromising on the look and it’s the best way I know — combining IKEA kitchen cabinets with custom doors. And today I wanted to share a recently launched, new range of doors for IKEA cabinets called Column by Danish Reform CPH.  These Column doors fit the basic IKEA Metod kitchen range (called Sektion in some countries) but you also have the option of getting the cabinets from Reform CPH.

The new Column range of doors is designed by Inga Sempé. Kitchens tend to be angular rooms with cabinets, appliances and most other features having sharp lines. To counteract this, Sempé wanted to introduce some roundness and she came up with the Column design which features a large rounded central handle. The handles are chunky enough to stand up to the angular doors yet add a softness to the overall design.

The column doors come in three different wood finishes — white ash, natural oak and dark wood. They also come in three painted veneers in pistachio, cream and concrete grey. All three finishes are muted and striking. You can opt for a tone on tone look with matching doors and handles or you can go for a contrast like opting for cream doors with white ash handles. My personal favourite though is the tone on tone look with a contrasting countertop in a different material like stone.

It’s the recurring curved handles that give this kitchen so much character and interest. As the designer Inga Sempé says “the curved and gentle design of Column is an intentional break with the volumes and dimensions of the modern kitchen, a break with our expectations. A central handle stretches from top to bottom, dividing the front into two. This results in a visual playfulness with an unusual rhythm.”

This is such a simple yet striking kitchen design and the colours are stunning too. And of course the icing on the cake is that these doors fit IKEA kitchen cabinets making this a more affordable way to transform a kitchen. Visit Reform CPH for lots more info.
