New Zealand Architect and Interior Designer Annabel Smart and Marijne Vogel, an Interior Architect originally from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, have recently teamed up to form the Melbourne-based Design Studio 11:11. Working across multiple disciplines, they explore the boundaries between interior architecture, leather goods and objects, with each project defined by the notions of functionality, simplicity and craftsmanship. This beautiful kitchen is their first completed interior design project, designed for clients who live in Mt Eliza, a beautiful leafy suburb located on the Mornington Peninsula. The use of a native timber species sets an incredible material scene in fitting with the surrounding native trees and plants.

In keeping with the studio’s belief that simplicity is the result of a highly resolved design, a beautiful sense of calm has been created through the use of a natural and neutral palette, paired back forms and by eliminating the unnecessary. Working with local Melbourne artisans and using the finest materials, craftsmanship is approached with permanence in mind, while also embracing the natural patina that occurs over time.

“We wanted to create a seamless kitchen design with one continuous strong visual aspect, which became the applied panelling. Every other surface is kept very light and neutral with the emphasis on hidden detailing”. The absence of applied handles, exposed hinges or lighting allows the exquisite material palette including spotted gum veneer /solid wood, and Quartzite natural stone from CDK to take centre stage. Paired with a porcelain splashback from Artedomus, the result is truly sublime. Designed to look like a table, the central island enhances the overall space by providing a more open feel.

Appealing to my love of Japanese of design, the kitchen features beautiful objects by Kurieto and a simple yet functional Pitt cooktop.

A dream space, I can’t help but feel a little envious of the owners of this beautiful kitchen! I’m also looking forward to seeing more projects from Studio 11:11
