Mid-century modern architecture and furniture design was widespread in the US during the post-World War II years but its interior design aesthetic is still loved across the world today. Here, we’ll look at mid-century modern interior design on two different scales. Home number one features a spacious open-plan living room with enormous floor-to-ceiling windows, a large eat-in kitchen, and an airy entryway. Bedrooms are generously proportioned and the kids’ room even features a physical adventure space. Our second mid-century modern home design has a more compact scale with a tighter living room layout. Space-saving furniture choices fit neatly into each available nook, while built-in storage optimizes the home workspace.

This 450 sqm mid-century modern-style home in Lebedivka, Ukraine has a welcoming atmosphere that springs from a palette of warm accent hues. A muted red living room rug places pattern underneath a pale couch, while brown scatter cushions break up the upholstery. A round coffee table and a tripod floor lamp introduce natural wood tone.
Behind the couch, three large wicker pendant lights illuminate a mid-century modern-inspired dining set. Upholstered wooden dining chairs seat up to eight people around a racetrack-shaped wooden dining table.
A mid-century modern-style sofa table not only serves the couch but offers convenient storage to the dining area. A solid wood clad TV wall builds upon the mid-century vibe beneath clerestory windows.
The sunny kitchen design employs the same warming woodtone, while introducing a popular mid-century shade of olive green. The green cabinet colorway highlights an isolated L-shaped cabinet run, which is raised up from the floor on elegant legs.
A “crazy paving” kitchen floor design makes a loud mid-century style statement. It also offers a durable surface that can be easily washed free of food spills.
The central kitchen island features a round dining table extension, where three people can gather for breakfast or just for a cup of coffee. The red bar stools make a bold and playful contrast with the surrounding olive green kitchen units.
In the crazy-paved hallway, a mid-century storage unit is teamed with a stylish bench. The storage unit adds a fun pop of orange to the subdued decor palette.
Mirrored storage units make the hallway appear large and bright. Reeded glass clerestory windows share natural light from the home entryway with the neighboring hallway.
A slender console table marks the end of the home entryway, where crazy-paving ends and parquet flooring begins. The black table frame complements metal detailing on the staircase around the corner.
Windows surround the front door, giving it a surreal freestanding effect. The garden view is reflected in the row of mirrored coat closets, doubling its effect.
In the first bedroom, light blue accents create a calming aesthetic. A blue bed runner ties in with a blue upholstered headboard treatment. Artwork spreads a plethora of blue hues across the focal wall.
Beside the platform bed, the relaxing blue decor scheme is briefly interrupted by a hot pink rocking chair with an Eames-style Eiffel leg frame. A mid-century modern bookcase stands beside the rocking chair to fashion an inviting reading nook.
A modern sputnik chandelier speaks of its mid-century modern forerunners. Globe bedside table lamps match its spherical shades.
In the second bedroom, a neutral decor scheme takes over. A natural wood headboard, end of bed bench, and mid-century sideboard are complemented by a wood-clad ceiling treatment.
Bedside cabinets with tapered legs complete the mid century modern furniture arrangement.
A green garden vista uplifts the neutral bedroom scheme.
In the child’s room, a plywood kids’ bed and a tall bookcase are centrally situated to divide the long space in two.
On one side of the open bookcase, there is a comfy TV lounge where the child can snuggle up with a parent for one last show before bedtime. A built-in bench and a couple of bookshelves fashion a small reading nook. A craft table and kids’ stools give little artists the opportunity to create to their heart’s content.
Two huge, ground floor windows fill the kid’s room with sunshine and a pleasant view of the lush green garden.
Behind the bookcase, ladders lead to a set of monkey bars. A climbing wall offers more scope for physical play and adventure. A pad is placed at the bottom to drop onto; a couple of scatter cushions make it a cozy place to hang out and read too.

Our second featured mid-century modern-style home is on a smaller scale than the first. In this open plan living room, a small sofa seats just two. Built-in display shelves fill an awkward alcove and build a pleasing backdrop.
In front of the small couch, a mid century modern coffee table draws a classic reuleaux triangle silhouette. A wooden bookstand and a ceramic vase fashion a chic table centerpiece.
The opposite end of the narrow room is dedicated to the kitchen diner space. A small dining table comfortably seats four people.
Despite the apartment’s small size, the home workspace is equipped with an abundance of storage space. Built-in cabinets and shelves stretch from floor to ceiling, wrapping around two full walls. Paper storage boxes, books and vases fill the stacks.
An ergonomic swivel chair adds a pale pink accent beside the built-in wooden desk.
