Minimalist interiors are all about being calm and pared-back but sometimes they can look or feel a little cold. One easy and instant way to add some warmth is with a hint of brass which can transform a room. Brass can add depth and warmth to a room, without taking away from the clean aesthetic of a minimalist space. And that’s exactly what today’s little decor idea is about — simple ways to add brass accents to a minimalist room, especially if it feels a little cold.

Brass is my favourite metal to add to a minimalist interior because it’s timeless whereas other metallic finishes like chrome and copper can feel a bit too trendy. Besides, chrome is a cool metal, so it won’t add warmth to a space and copper is a bit too bold and bright for minimalist spaces.

Brass, on the other hand, works really well with a neutral colour palette. It complements all neutral shades like white, black, beige and grey. That said, it’s important not to overdo it because too much brass can quickly become overpowering. Minimalist interiors are all about restraint, so the key is to be intentional with a few well-chosen accents that will have much more impact than lots of brass everywhere.

Here are some simple ways to add brass accents to any room in your home:

1. Brass hardware – this is one of the best ways to add a small amount of brass to any room. Brass handles, doorknobs, light switches and hinges will all elevate a space whether that’s a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom.

2. Brass lighting – this is one of my favourite ways to add brass to a room. A brass table lamp, a pendant with brass accents or even a brass ceiling light (currently loving this handmade brass orb ceiling light with glass globe), can all help to soften a space while creating a focal point. But don’t be tempted to go for all brass lighting in any room as that can end up looking too much.

3. Brass decorations – think things like brass candle holders, brass trays, brass planters and brass bowls which are all small decorations but even one or two of these can make an impact. I often pair these diy brass and wood napkin rings with white linen napkins and white plates and the brass instantly elevates my all-white table decor.

4. Brass mirrors – mirrors with brass frames are yet another way to add a brass accent to any room. For e.g. a brass mirror added to an all white bathroom will add interest and warmth. A brass mirror would also look great in a minimalist entryway or  bedroom.

5. Brass taps – though taps are technically hardware, I wanted to make a separate point here as brass taps and shower heads can be so striking and they become focal points when used in a kitchen or bathroom. I especially love brass taps in a kitchen when paired with cool marble or any natural stone.

6. Brass furniture – brass furniture is yet another way to add some brass into a room for instant warmth (things like a brass side table, a brass coffee table, a chair with brass legs). But with brass furniture, especially if it’s all brass, restraint is all important meaning one statement piece is usually plenty in any space.

7. Brass picture frames – using brass picture frames is another way to add a hint of brass to any room. To keep it subtle, you could use a mix of wooden and brass frames, especially if you have lots of wall art.
