Belgian studio Nicolas Schuybroek Architects reveal their first collaboration with AESOP in Lyon, France.

AESOP approached architect Nicolas Schuybroek to design a second signature store in Lyon’s Place de la République, as a light and airy contrast to their inaugural space, which opened in 2017.

While both stores share the essence of the AESOP brand, Nicolas says his design is in many ways different to the first – not only is it one of the largest AESOP stores in the world, but it also layers a series of raw, textured and warm materials. “This location is also characterised by the abundant amount of natural light, high windows and extremely high ceilings,” Nicolas Schuybroek adds.

“This location is also characterised by the abundant amount of natural light, high windows and extremely high ceilings,” Nicolas Schuybroek says.

Nicolas Schuybroek lifted inspiration for the design from the site’s architectural shell and historic surroundings. The architect and his team have created a sense of contrast with the traditional exterior through the ‘raw modernity’ within – highlighting the building’s past life, with contemporary layers added sparingly to create textural variation and patina with age. One of the store’s defining features is the cloud-like ceiling clad in untouched fire-resistant foam, deliberately left exposed, which plays to the warmth of the wool felt that also lines the space for sound absorption.

Freestanding elements, such as the large central basin, are crafted from wood veneer and local tin, taking cues from the city’s fountains. “The very rigorous design approach in terms of proportions and aesthetics combined with a series of carefully selected materials such as felt, patinated pewter and stained wood, reflects the strength of the collaboration,” Nicolas says.
