Ilonka Karasz was born in Hungary and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and Crafts in Budapest. In 1913 she immigrated to the United States where she began her career as a modern artist and designer. Her work was inspired by both folk and modern art and could be found in textiles, home accessories and toys. In the illustration period of her career she created images for avant -garde publications, children’s books and a total of 186 New Yorker covers.
