How to make a feature of your radiators so they work with your interior design

When it comes to decorating a home, chances are most of us pay very little attention to the style and colour of the radiators. Radiators are treated as purely functional and seen as an eye-sore by so many of us. The good news is that they don’t have to be because you can make radiators work with your decor rather than against it.

Since we all need radiators, we might as well embrace them and make the most of them. We don’t have to spend our time trying to hide them because it’s entirely possible for them to be a feature. Here are some ways to make your radiators work with your decor and to make them a design element rather than something that’s just functional or boring!

Here’s how to make radiators work with your interior design style:
choose with intent

If you’re at the decorating stage or thinking of switching up your radiators, consider the style of radiator you want to go for. After all, they’re going to feature in every room so being intentional with radiators is just as important as with anything else in a room.

There’s so much choice out there now from traditional old school style radiators to ultra-modern flat fronted radiators, as you can see from the selection at places like Trade Radiators. Radiators can be chunky or slim, tall or wide and even curved to fit snugly in to bay windows — the options are endless. Opt for a style that works with your decor and the layout of your room.

go for a tone-on-tone look

Matching radiators to the colour of your walls is a great design trick to make the radiators a part of your decor. Tone-on-tone decor can make any room look cohesive and it makes a style statement too. If not exactly the same colour, you can opt for a colour that is a shade or two darker or lighter than your wall colour. This will give it a bit of contrast and still work just as cohesively.

I’ve always wondered why so many of us have white radiators when you can practically have any colour! Unless you have white walls, why stick to white radiators? With a little know-how, radiators can be easily painted to match your walls, and the result is stunning.

create a contrast

Go bold and make a feature of your radiators by painting them in a contrasting colour to the walls. You could match the colour to a large piece of decor in the room like a sofa to keep the look cohesive. Or you could opt for a bold neutral like a charcoal grey or black against white walls. You could also opt for radiators in a metallic finish like copper or brass which would look striking in a neutral coloured living space.

match the wallpaper

If you happen to have a wallpapered wall, pick the dominant colour in the wallpaper and paint the radiator in the same colour. This will not only make the two elements look cohesive but will create even more of a focal point int he room.

add feature valves

Yet another way to dress up your radiators by opting for feature valves and pipe sleeves. You could pair white radiators with dull gold valves or even black valves and sleeves for a monochrome look. Black radiators can be paired with other metallics like aged brass or bronze. Once again, the options are plenty but if you don’t find a colour you like, you can always paint the valves and pipe sleeves too.
