An industrial studio turned visionary home, Vasto Gallery in Poblenou, Barcelona, is where art and architecture intersect to create a unique living experience. Conceived by local design studio Mesura, the home rests on an open plan with two distinct public and private zones, doubling as an exhibition space.

The space also features a custom coffee table designed by resident artist Sara Regal out of waste materials from the construction process, which is paired with a Living Divani Extrasoft sofa. Artwork by Albert Riera Galceran.

The synergy between art and architecture and how they enhance the other is an inherent part of human history. So, naturally, when a gallery owner commissioned Mesura to design a dual home-gallery space, the studio eagerly embraced the opportunity to dissolve the boundary between the two creative realms.

The space is located inside a former factory building in Poblenou, Barcelona’s industrial precinct for the better part of a century before the de-industrialisation period of the 60s and 70s. After that, many buildings were left vacant, transforming the neighbourhood into the city’s creative hub, attracting artists, musicians, gallery owners and creatives alike. The space adopts an open plan, with windows on three of its walls and two rows of structural steel columns. Its unique ceiling imitates local 19th-century architect Joan Torras’ construction techniques, featuring reinforced beams and a vaulted shape.

The kitchen features a custom eight-metre-long stainless-steel counter designed by Mesura, which contrasts with bright-blue sculptural stools designed by Max Enrich.

Mesura maintained the open plan as they believed it was ideally suited to a dual home-gallery space; however, they implemented a timber ‘core’ to divide the public and private zones. The core is detached from the walls and ceilings to keep the space fluid, emphasising it as a free-standing element rather than a wall.

The public zone has a kitchen with an eight-metre-long stainless-steel counter, which flows seamlessly into the dining and living spaces. The vastness of the space, in conjunction with its lightness, makes it the perfect place to exhibit art, with the architecture and furniture easily passing as works of art themselves. The private zone follows the same open plan, with a bed, bathtub and sink becoming ‘loose’ elements within the one space. Acknowledging that an open plan has limits, Mesura cleverly utilised the core to house a shower, toilet and walk-in wardrobe.
