Warm materiality and a heightened sense of comfort underscore this three-storey apartment on the Brisbane River, designed by Samantha Leigh Interiors.

“The moment you step into the home, you can’t help but take a deep breath and exhale,” Brisbane-based interior designer Samantha Leigh says of her latest project ‘New Farm Residence’. With Samantha and her team at the helm, the waterfront apartment underwent an extensive transformation, emerging as the calming four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment it is today. “We wanted to create a home that would grow alongside the family – modern yet timeless,” Samantha says.

The living room features a B&B Italia Camaleonda sofa, a pair of vintage nesting tables from Tigmi Trading, a custom aged brass and silver travertine coffee table designed by SLI, an Artemide Shogun table lamp, a custom rug designed by SLI and made by Designer Rugs, an &Tradition Copenhagen floor lamp, a pair of 1960s Audoux Minnet armchairs from Tigmi Trading, and a vintage Maxalto Africa chair. Both artworks are by Marisa Purcell; atop the coffee table is a vintage Murano Rostrato vase from Secondi.

Samantha Leigh Interiors thoughtfully designed each space to cater to the specific needs and preferences of the family, with Samantha noting that “they love to lead an active and busy lifestyle, and are often hosting friends and family at the weekend.” As such, the home needed to be both a place to relax and entertain. This informed the choice of materials and furnishings, as well as the layout, which clearly delineates the living areas from the private areas.

Aiming to instil a tactile quality within the spaces, the design team selected warm, textural materials that felt sophisticated and casual. “Creating a sense of warmth was paramount, which is why we opted for a calming base palette of Tongue & Groove European oak floorboards and Venetian plastered walls and ceilings,” she says. “We were drawn to the colour Graupa for the floors as it resembles natural oak and has a beautiful texture. We then requested a custom chevron pattern to add interest and movement to the spaces.” Complementing the floors, walls, and ceilings are custom built-in elements made of American oak and different types of natural stone.

With these neutral materials as their canvas, Samantha Leigh Interiors were able to infuse the interiors with layers of texture and colour to ignite visual interest. “A lot of our early references for the project were European – always textural and always layered,” Samantha says. Vintage pieces coincide seamlessly with contemporary elements, creating spaces that exude comfort and refinement.

By attuning themselves to the clients’ aesthetic preferences and evolving needs, Samantha Leigh Interiors have realised both a family retreat and an entertainer’s delight. “Our clients often remind us how much they love spending time at home, which, to us, is the most important measure of success,” Samantha says.
