Encircling an established Elm tree, this Edwardian-style Melbourne home with a contemporary extension has been meticulously designed to coexist with its natural surroundings.

The homeowners, a professional couple with two teenage sons, entrusted local interior design studio GOLDEN to fulfil their vision of a layered, tranquil residence with a strong connection to the garden. Honouring the original Edwardian architecture, the design team seamlessly integrated classic period details with rich textures, contemporary furniture, and art. GOLDEN co-director Kylie Buhagiar aptly describes the project as “a combination of natural materiality and sumptuous details, creating an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere.”

The home is built around an existing Elm tree, with the box-shaped rear extension carefully attached to the existing house. The old and the new seamlessly flow into one another, facilitated by a wide timber-lined passage.

Kylie describes the interiors as “restrained” and “balanced”, infused with abundant natural light and adorned with nods to the outdoor environment. Clerestory windows draw light deep into the contemporary part of the home, where GOLDEN have combined various types of natural stones, including hand-cut limestone flooring, a sleek travertine kitchen island and a custom marble fireplace. Warm accents, including bronze panels and silver-grey oak veneer joinery, counterbalance these rich tones, contributing to the feeling of serenity.

The home showcases furniture and artwork that reflect the design-discerning and well-travelled clients. “The homeowners wanted to create a space that evoked their past experiences living and working abroad extensively,” Kylie says. In particular, they desired the garden to mirror the natural beauty of Asia, with the home embracing that beauty from every perspective.

In essence, Elm Residence demonstrates GOLDEN’s artistry and intuition in residential design and their ability to reflect a client’s vision, past experiences and lifestyle choices.
